After the disastrous launch of 2019’s WWE 2K20, 2K took a year off from their annual WWE series to get things right. The series needed a massive reboot – that much was obvious. 2K had to come up with some new ideas and channel the bet old ones to create a game that would redeem the series in the eyes of jaded fans. If there was one feature said jaded fans wanted back in the games, it was the renowned GM Mode. It was, without question, the most requested feature every year since its perplexing removal in 2009. We have even written about it ourselves. But now, thanks to a brand new trailer, we know GM Mode will return in WWE 2K22.

WWE 2K22 GM Mode

The new trailer gives us a glimpse of WWE 2K22‘s various new features, including “My GM”, which appears to be GM Mode. The trailer was posted, made private, leaked, and then re-posted by the official WWE 2K channel. It’s unclear why, but it’s now up for all to see on the official channel.

We get a whopping nine second look ay My GM in the new trailer which is also crammed alongside nine other “new” features. From that small look, however, we can see the new My GM is wholly inspired by the classic GM Mode.

WWE 2K22 My GM

The new trailer shows some screens and menus of the WWE 2K22 GM mode: My GM. And it will look very familiar to those who played GM Mode back in the day.

Draft

The first thing we see is a Draft screen where the player can choose WWE Superstars to draft to their SmackDown show. Each Superstar has set attributes: Role (heel or babyface), Class (wrestling style), Cost, “POP” (popularity?), and “STA” (standing/stamina?). From this, we can deduce players will have to balance their books and make smart decisions when it comes to how much they spend as well as what roles they want each Superstar to fill on their show.

Booking a Show

After a quick glimpse at the initial Superstar Draft, we see a show’s schedule. This gives us a bit of an insight into what we can expect to be able to do on our fantasy shows in WWE 2K22 GM mode.

Here, the Opener match is a TLC between Tamina Snuka and Bianca Belair at a cost of $5,000. This is followed by a Self Promo with Tyler Bate. Then we have a Mid Card match between Samoa Joe and another wrestler. Next is another Self Promo with Montez Ford before a Main Event between Roman Reigns and Big E. How flexible this show structure will be is unclear. Hopefully, it won’t follow such a rigid three match, two promo structure every week.

Finally, we get a glimpse of the My GM “Book Show” screen. Here players can choose match rules, participants, and match type (including associated monetary and fatigue cost), as well as toggle the options for a title match and interference. By pressing the left and right shoulder buttons, the player can flick between different menus. These are: Book Show, Show Logistics, Manage Roster, Power Cards, Journal and Ratings. Above that is a budget (which the player will presumably have to manage for each show) of $69,200 and total show cost.

WWE 2K22 New Featues

So, there we have it – GM Mode is back in WWE 2K22. “My GM” could be a game changer for the series. And it has certainly peaked our interest.

Other than My GM, 2K are also touting the following as a “Hit List of Features and Innovations” for 2K22:

  • Redesigned Gameplay Engine
  • New Controls
  • Stunning Graphics
  • Immersive Presentation
  • New 2K Showcase
  • My Faction
  • My Rise
  • Universe Mode
  • Creation Suite
