It’s been well over a year since the official reveal of Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6). But despite all the time that’s passed since then, we still know very little about GTA 6 – and that includes how much it’s going to cost.

Most gamers likely assume that GTA 6 will cost the industry-standard $70 when it finally releases. However, you might’ve seen recent chatter online that suggests GTA 6 will, in fact, cost an eye-watering $100.

That may be hard to believe given the economic challenges many people face in 2025. How could publishers possibly justify a $30 price hike for a video game when some customers already consider them overpriced? But price rises are being widely discussed online, and some in the industry would like to see the rumours become a reality.

New report hints at GTA 6 price rise

A huge new report titled “State of Video Gaming in 2025” by analyst and researcher Matthew Ball states that “some gamemakers hope GTA VI will be priced at $80-100.”

If Take-Two Interactive – the parent company of GTA publisher Rockstar Games – decides to ramp up the price of GTA 6, Ball believes it could “re-establish packaged video game prices after decades of deflation” and “[break] the $70 barrier” that publishers currently contend with.

If Ball’s theory is correct, GTA 6‘s popularity would be used as a sort-of cover for a significant industry-wide price increase and help make gamers comfortable with higher prices for other games.

While this may be concerning to hear, Ball’s reasoning makes economic sense. “In real terms, a $70 GTA VI would be the cheapest-ever GTA,” he explains. Ball elaborates that a $70 price tag would make GTA 6 “30% [cheaper] than its original 2D entries, and 16-24% less than GTA IV and GTA V”, which were released 17 and 12 years ago respectively.

Ball also notes that “No other major leisure forms have seen their products become worth less nearly every single year for decades – and this hurts developers of every size and budget.” Therefore, a higher price for GTA 6 – and video games in general – could be a huge benefit to struggling developers.

What will GTA 6 cost?

The actual retail price of GTA 6 is unknown. The game is still a long way from release and isn’t expected to arrive until the final months of 2025 at the earliest. So, customers shouldn’t expect confirmation on its pricing for the foreseeable future.

With that being said, there’s no reason for gamers to believe GTA 6 will cost $100 – yet. The $70 price tag we’re all accustomed to for new games is still the standard, despite recent speculation. And unless it’s officially confirmed otherwise, it’s reasonable to assume that GTA 6 will remain at this price.
