Double or Nothing is arguably AEW’s biggest show of the year. And with an excellent track record of great pay-per-view events, AEW looks set to deliver another banger on 28th May. The show features an impressive 10-match card that fans can’t wait to see. But more casual viewers may be puzzled by the inclusion of a certain wrestler. ECW legend Sabu is set to appear as the special guest enforcer for the Chris Jericho vs. Adam Cole unsanctioned match. But why is Sabu in AEW?
Sabu – real name Terry Brunk – has had a storied career since it began in 1984. He has wrestled all over the world for countless promotions, most notably Extreme Championship Wrestling during the 1990s. Sabu built a reputation for death defying stunts and his participation in hardcore matches, earning the nickname “The Homicidal, Suicidal, Genocidal”.
He also spent time in WWE from 2006-2007 as part of its ECW revival and had a couple of stints in TNA. But after years of quietly working the independent scene before ultimately retiring, AEW fans were shocked when he appeared on the 24th May edition of Dynamite.
But why is Sabu in AEW after all these years away from the spotlight?
Why is Sabu in AEW?
Sabu will act as special guest enforcer for the Chris Jericho vs. Adam Cole unsanctioned match at AEW Double or Nothing 2023. During the contract signing for the match, Adam Cole said he needed to find someone willing to back him and Roderick Strong up against five members of the Jericho Appreciation Society. Therefore, he contacted Sabu who lives in Las Vegas which is where Double or Nothing is taking place.
Cole also stated that he grew up idolising Sabu and that Sabu is crazier than all members of the Jericho Appreciation Society combined.
Sabu then appeared and assisted Cole and Strong in scaring off the Jericho Appreciation Society by attacking “Daddy Magic” Matt Menard with a steel chair.
Interestingly, Adam Cole later said that Sabu’s involvement in the match at Double or Nothing “came together last minute”.
You can check out the full video of the contract signing, including Sabu’s appearance, on YouTube.
Exactly how Sabu will impact the unsanctioned match is unclear. Although his involvement is sure to add an extreme element to the bout if his previous work is anything to go by.
