Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has swung into theatres, igniting fervour among fans eager to embark on an exhilarating inter-dimensional web-slinging adventure. Fans familiar with the initial animated Spider-Verse instalment anticipate a multitude of diverse Spider-People gracing the screen in the new sequel. Nonetheless, one friendly neighbourhood hero that fans are most excited about is Spider-Punk. And now they want to know “who is Hobie Brown?”

Set sixteen months after the events of Into the Spider-Verse, the sequel continues the story of Miles Morales. A seasoned Miles now faces the daunting task of balancing his duties as Spider-Man while navigating the complexities of his personal and academic obligations. The absence of Gwen, also known as Spider-Woman from Earth-65, who departed for her own universe in the conclusion of the previous instalment, leaves Miles longing for her companionship, intensifying his emotional struggle.

Little does Miles know, Gwen has been enlisted into a Spider-Society consisting of Spider-People from different parallel universes. Among them is Miguel O’Hara/Spider-Man 2099, Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman, Pavitr Prabhakar/Spider-Man India, and Hobie Brown/Spider-Punk.

Who is Hobie Brown in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse?

Who is Hobie Brown in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse? Hobie Brown is a British punk rocker version of Spider-Man from another universe. With his unmistakable punk aesthetic, dry sense of humour, and charismatic persona, Brown is probably the coolest of the Spider-People. He uses his guitar as his main weapon and has a history with Earth-65’s Gwen Stacy. In his own universe, Hobie fights against a totalitarian regime which perfectly parallels his anti-establishment mantra.

In the new movie, Hobie proves to be a vital ally to Miles as he battles against the Spot and the morally ambiguous Spider-Society.

Hobie Brown in Marvel Comics

In the comics, there are two version of Hobie Brown. The first is as the original Prowler. Created by Stan Lee, John Buscema, and Jim Mooney, he first appeared in “The Amazing Spider-Man” #78 in 1969. Hobie Brown is an African-American character who initially started as a small-time crook, but eventually turned to heroics and became a valuable ally to Spider-Man.

The Prowler has a unique suit, similar to Spider-Man, granting him enhanced abilities. He operates in a morally grey area and has a complex relationship with Spider-Man. Over the years, he has been both a friend and an occasional adversary to Spidey.

The comic’s second version of Hobie is as Spider-Punk, the British punk rocker from Earth-138. He was created by Dan Slott and Olivier Coipel, and first appeared in “The Amazing Spider-Man” #10 in January 2015. This is the same iteration of the character that appears in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
