Season 5 of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II and Warzone will begin on 2nd August. We already know three new operators will be included. But one operator in particular has taken fans by surprise – Graves. But who is Graves in MW2 and why are players so shocked to see him?
With Season 5 right around the corner, many players are starting to turn their attention to the next Call of Duty. All signs point to Modern Warfare III. But the possible return of Graves could have interesting implications for that game’s story.
For you to properly understand who Graves is and why his role in Modern Warfare II is important, you need to play its campaign.
As a key character in MW2‘s plot, Graves is arguably responsible for its most shocking twist and changing its direction. However, many thought Modern Warfare II‘s campaign would be the last they’d see of him.
Who is Graves in MW2?
Graves’ full name is Phillip Graves. He was the Commander and CEO of Shadow Company.
The character first appears in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II‘s story in a supporting role. Shadow Company initially assists Task Force 141 during the campaign. However, after the completion of the mission “Dark Water”, Graves shockingly turns on Soap, Ghost, and Alejandro Vargas.
Graves then becomes one of the game’s main antagonists and it is later revealed that Graves is aligned with General Shepherd. The two are conspiring to move ballistic missiles to the Middle East.
Ultimately, Soap and Graves faced off at the end of “Ghost Team”, the penultimate mission in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II.
Graves was using a tank to try and kill Soap. But Soap was able to use C4 to destroy the tank and kill Graves in the process. Despite this, with the reveal of Season 5, it appears that Graves was not dead after all.
Exactly what his role in the new season is and what this means for Modern Warfare III is unclear. However, it has been suggested that the next Call of Duty will be unveiled as part of Season 5. So, it’s possible that Graves may factor into this in some way.
In a tweet, the official Call of Duty account said of Graves’ comeback: “Late to his own funeral, it’s… Graves”.
