At this point, we all know about the ups and downs of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Despite its record breaking success, fans have mixed feelings about the game. But attention is now turning to Season 2 and lots of players are talking about the introduction of Ranked Play. But when does Ranked come out for Modern Warfare 2 (MW2)?

For those that don’t know, Ranked Play was first introduced to the Call of Duty franchise in 2021’s Vanguard. The purpose of Ranked Play is to provide players with an experience focused on competition and rankings.

While there is, obviously, a competitive element to standard multiplayer, there are no specific rewards or rankings to indicate player success. Everything can be obtained simply by playing, regardless of skill level. Having a true competitive game mode is the answer to this.

It allows players to compete against each other in matches where the outcome really matters and can impact your standing.

Ranked Play features 4v4 multiplayer and uses the official rules of Call of Duty League (CDL).

It will arrive with Season 2 of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. But it won’t be exactly the same as before. It will feature a number of changes. So, what can players expect?

Game Modes & Maps

Acivision has confirmed a number of details about Ranked Play in an official Call of Duty blog.

Ranked Play in MW2 will feature official Call of Duty League maps. These are El Asilo, Embassy, Al Bagra Fortress, Breenbergh Hotel, Zarqwa Hydroelectric, and Mercado Las Almas.

As for game modes, these are also taken from CDL. Players can enjoy Hardpoint, Search and Destroy, and Control in Ranked Play.

Skill Divisions & Ranks

There are eight Skill Divisions in MW2 Ranked Play. These are Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Crimson, Iridescent, and Top 250.

But it doesn’t stop there. Each Skill Division up to Iridescent will be split into three “tiers”, e.g. Bronze I, Bronze II, Bronze III. These must be completed before reaching the next Skill Division.

At the start of the season, all players will begin in the Bronze Skill Division. Climbing through the Skill Divisions is all down to how much SR (Skill Rating) you earn.

SR is rewarded primarily for victories and is deducted when you lose. However, performance (both yours and your team’s) will also be a key factor in gaining or losing SR.

Ranks range from 1-50 and won’t reset at the end of a season. Ranking up is – in theory – possible for all players, regardless of which Skill Division they are in. The only requirement is to win matches, which rewards Stars and rank you up.

So, onto the big question on everyone’s minds. When will players be able to dive in and start ranking up and climbing through those Skill Divisions?

This is when Ranked comes out for Modern Warfare 2. Ranked Play comes out for MW2 on Wednesday 15 February 2023 when Season 2 begins. Season 2 will start at different times depending on which region you are in.

Activision is hyping a massive Modern Warfare 2 shake-up for Season 2. And Ranked Play is sure to generate some interest for players wanting a more competitive experience.

As for whether the new season can reinvigorate interest in Warzone, that remains to be seen. Although a fresh start is exactly what the battle royale needs.
