You might have seen some videos floating around recently of a little-known game called World War 3. Some are dubbing it a “Battlefield killer”. And it’s understandable that people want something to fill the Battlefield-shaped hole in their hearts. Battlefield 2042 was a tremendous letdown after all. But “killer” games often fail to live up to the moniker (*cough* Haze *cough*). So, what exactly is the World War 3 game? And is it something worth checking out for yourself?
What is World War 3 game?
World War 3 is a tactical online multiplayer first-person shooter. It comes from Polish developer The Farm 51, who were behind 2021’s sci-fi survival game Chernobylite. It’s obvious why people are so quick to compare World War 3 to Battlefield – graphically, it looks very similar. And it bears other familiar traits, including a “huge arsenal of weapons, vehicles, gadgets, and drones at your disposal” according to its Steam listing. Not only that, but it focuses heavily on team-based skirmishes. That means teamwork and taking a tactical approach to enemy encounters is key.
World War 3 also boasts ‘playable realism’. What does that mean? Its official website states: “Every shot counts. Discover realistic gameplay features that enhance immersion without impacting combat, including an advanced ballistics system, full body awareness, vehicle physics, and extensive customization.”
Game modes
World War 3 features two game modes at the moment – Team Deathmatch and Tactical Ops. Tactical Ops splits 40 players into two teams of 20. It’s typical Conquest/Domination-style action – each team has to attack or defend capture points. Team Deathmatch allows a maximum of 20 players to face off in two teams of 10.
World War 3 release date
When is World War 3 coming out? You’ll be pleased to hear that it’s already been released (kind of). It was first launched back in October 2018, but is currently in Closed Beta and is an Early Access game. That means if you want to check it out, prepare yourself for bugs and glitches as it isn’t a finished product yet.
Platforms
World War 3 is currently only available on PC via Steam. So if you’re hoping for World War 3 PS4 and World War 3 PS5 or are asking “is World War 3 on console?”, that’s likely disappointing news. As the game is still in Early Access, it’ll probably be quite a while before we see it on PlayStation or Xbox – if we ever do.
World War 3 player count
Intrigued yet? Thinking about giving it a try? You might be wondering how many people play World War 3. According to Steam Charts, December 2021 saw a peak player count of 2,098. That’s not a huge community, but more than enough to ensure there are plenty of matches to play.
