Oppenheimer is one of the most anticipated films of 2023. It stars Cillian Murphy as the eponymous physicist and explores his life and role in the creation of the atomic bomb. While the movie’s subject matter is undoubtedly serious, that hasn’t stopped the internet from creating hilarious content about terrifying weapons of mass destruction. And one example of this is the “Whoppenheimer” burger.

Yes – it sounds ridiculous. And that’s because it is ridiculous. But this Oppenheimer-inspired burger has gone viral on social media thanks to the infectious mix of nostalgia and excitement (and hunger, probably).

But what is the Whoppenheimer?

What is the Whoppenheimer?

The Whoppenheimer comes from a viral tweet about Burger King and the upcoming Oppenheimer film. The tweet was posted by Twitter user @WyattDuncan on 2nd June 2023 and said: “if oppenheimer came out in 1997, there probably would have been a burger king tie in meal called the whoppenheimer. sad our society has become too woke for that to happen”.

Naturally, this generated quite the reaction from other Twitter users. At the time of writing, @WyattDuncan’s tweet about the Oppenheimer burger boasts an impressive 89.1K likes and 10.6K retweets.

The tweet refers to the fast food chain Burger King‘s countless movie tie-in campaigns. While they are still a Burger King staple today, they were also a prominent promotional tactic in the 1990s.

It should be noted that the Whoppenheimer is not a real Burger King meal. However, Twitter user @WeedDigimon created a fake tie-in promotional poster for the burger and movie – and now we’re hungry:

Oppenheimer is scheduled for release in theatres on 21st July 2023.
