What Is The Next Call Of Duty?: A New Modern Warfare Is On The Way

Call of Duty: Vanguard isn’t even with us yet. But attention has already turned to the next Call of Duty game. CoD‘s yearly releases are a given and there’s no doubt Call of Duty 2022 will be a reality. But as is always the case, fans are speculating what the next instalment will be and where it will be set.

The Call of Duty series is an interesting one. Primarily because it has been around for so long and has so many games under its belt. And with a new title being released every year since 2005, the series has covered A LOT of ground. That makes it hard for Activision to keep things fresh without taking massive creative risks. So, what does that mean for the next game? Will Activision take the series in an unexpected direction?

Personally, I’d love to see Activision try something new with the series. CoD – despite its longevity and over-reliance on familiar settings – has never tried its hand at World War I. Battlefield did it back in 2016 to excellent results. Having said that, we won’t be getting a World War I CoD any time soon. That’s because all recent reports indicate the next instalment in the series will be another Modern Warfare.

Modern Warfare was rebooted in 2019 to massive success. It earned more than $600m in its first three days. And a sequel – presumably titled Modern Warfare 2 – makes perfect sense. Fans love the setting and will no doubt be eager to revisit the sub-series. Industry insider Tom Henderson – who has leaked accurate CoD information before – tweeted last month that 2022’s entry would be a Modern Warfare sequel. For what it’s worth, he also shared its supposed codename: Project Cortez.

On 7th October 2021, Infinity Ward announced it was opening a new office in Austin, Texas. The company explained in a tweet: “This new development team based in Austin, TX, joins our teams in LA, Poland and Mexico”, adding “We’re hiring for all positions”. Off the back of this news, VGC repeated claims that a Modern Warfare sequel is next for the series. And it seems this new studio will be helping with its development. As for what the game is about – it will supposedly focus on US special forces fighting a war against Columbian drug cartels. Sounds pretty cool.

Who is developing Modern Warfare 2?

The rumoured new Modern Warfare will be developed by Infinity Ward. This makes sense given the series yearly development rotation, which also includes Treyarch and Sledgehammer. Treyarch helmed Black Ops Cold War and Sledgehammer are making Vanguard. That means it’s back to Infinity Ward for 2022’s CoD.

New Modern Warfare release date

So, you’re probably wondering “when is Call of Duty 2022 coming out?”. While we don’t know for sure, the next Modern Warfare release date is fairly easy to predict. That’s because all CoD games launch around the same time each year. We can say we are 99.999999% sure it’ll be released in 2022, unless there’s a big, unexpected change. It’s also likely we’ll be able to get our hands on it in October or November 2022, in keeping with the rest of the series.
