The Cyberpunk franchise is currently undergoing something of a resurgence. Between two years of patches for Cyberpunk 2077 and the new Edgerunners series, there’s a huge amount of renewed interest. To top things off, CD Projekt Red has officially confirmed that a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 is in the works. And now fans are asking “What is Cyberpunk Orion?

On October 4th 2022, CD Projekt Red revealed its upcoming slate of projects, some of which are already in development.

Taking to Twitter, the company announced a total of six new games between The Witcher and Cyberpunk franchises. A seventh game, a new IP codenamed “Hadar”, is also “in the earliest stages of the creative process”.

Future The Witcher titles include a brand new trilogy codenamed Polaris. There is also a separate title, badged Canis Majoris, that will be “a full-fledged Witcher game, separate to the new Witcher saga starting with Polaris”.

And finally there’s Sirius, a game from developers The Molasses Flood that will have “multiplayer gameplay on top of a single-player experience including a campaign with quests and a story”.

Perhaps most surprising was the announcement of a Cyberpunk 2077 sequel.

After a disastrous launch in 2020, many will be surprised that CD Projekt are pursuing the Cyberpunk IP at all. But with recent renewed interest in the franchise, the announcement of the follow-up, codenamed Orion, couldn’t come at a better time.

So, what is Cyberpunk Orion and what can fans expect from the new sequel?

What is Cyberpunk Orion?

One of the big problems with Cyberpunk 2077 was a perceived disparity between what CD Projekt Red promised and what they delivered. Whether you enjoyed the first game or not, it undoubtedly left a huge amount of room to explore the Cyberpunk universe in greater detail.

Between accusations of false promises and cut content, there is still a whole lot fans want to see from the Cyberpunk franchise.

Cyberpunk Orion is set to go even deeper than the first game and will hopefully learn from its predecessors missteps.

What is Cyberpunk Orion - official Twitter announcement

So, what is Cyberpunk Orion? Cyberpunk Orion will be a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077. It will “prove the full power and potential of the Cyberpunk universe”. CD Projekt Red explained it aims to “take the Cyberpunk franchise further and continue harnessing the potential of this dark future universe.”

Unfortunately, that’s all CDPR has officially confirmed at this time. With details being so scarce, it is difficult to say what exactly the new game will entail.

However, from the brief announcement, it’s clear the developers are intent on realising Cyberpunk‘s full potential. Hopefully, that means they aim to deliver not only what fans expected from the first game but to also innovate in new and meaningful ways.

Clearly things went badly wrong with the launch of Cyberpunk 2077. However, since then, CD Projekt Red has done a good job of fixing the game and we’d recommend you give it a try.

With this renewed enthusiasm, here’s hoping that they can deliver the definitive Cyberpunk experience in the new sequel.

Cyberpunk Orion Release Date

With the announcement of the sequel, fans are understandably asking “when is Cyberpunk Orion coming out?”

Cyberpunk Orion‘s announcement did not come with a prospective release date. However, we can make a good guess at when it may be coming out.

The new game’s release date is likely years away. But the foundations have already been laid, so the gap between announcement and release may not be as long as it was for 2077. That said, fans should probably expect Cyberpunk Orion to come out no earlier than 2025.

We will be sure to keep you updated on all the details about Cyberpunk Orion and its release as they become available.
