WWE has a long and complex history. And a key part of that history are countless different match types and unique terms that don’t just apply to WWE, but pro wrestling in general. Even the most seasoned and knowledgeable WWE fans can be forgiven for not knowing them all. One such term is “rubber match”. But what is a rubber match in WWE?

What makes this question relevant right now is SummerSlam 2023. WWE’s upcoming pay-per-view (PPV) is scheduled for 5 August and will take place at Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan.

The show’s card is stacked, with Roman Reigns vs. Jey Uso set to headline. Among the undercard is Cody Rhodes vs. Brock Lesnar for the third time.

The two have been feuding since the Raw after WrestleMania 39 when Lesnar savagely attacked Rhodes. Two PPV matches followed – one at Backlash (won by Cody) and the other at Night of Champions (won by Lesnar).

During a fiery promo on the 24 July 2023 edition of Raw, Cody called out Lesnar for attacking him in front of his mother the week before. He stated that Lesnar made a mistake for leaving him breathing following the attack.

With a match between the two scheduled for SummerSlam, Cody went on to say that he doesn’t “wanna go to SummerSlam just to win the rubber match. I want to go to SummerSlam to embarrass you, Brock Lesnar.”

But what is a rubber match and what does the term mean?

What is a rubber match in WWE?

A “rubber match” is the tiebreaker match between two WWE superstars.

As Brock Lesnar and Cody Rhodes are currently 1-1 in their feud, their meeting at SummerSlam is described as a rubber match.

Rubber matches are often used to end feuds in WWE, with the winner of the tie-breaking contest able to claim ultimate victory over the entire feud.

Given the nature of Cody Rhodes’ promo on Raw and his intention of ending the rivalry for good at SummerSlam, it is safe to assume this will be the final meeting between the two superstars for some time.
