Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings TV series may have only recently finished its first season but Tolkien fans can expect more journeys to Middle-Earth in the near future.
Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema have signed a deal with Embracer Group – the company that owns the rights to Tolkien’s legendarium – to produce new movies based on his iconic The Lord Of The Rings and The Hobbit novels.
J. R. R. Tolkien’s books are probably the most beloved works of fantasy ever written. Similarly, Peter Jackson’s film trilogy of adaptions are considered among the best movies of all time. They earned almost $3 billion dollars at the box office. What’s more, they secured 17 Academy Awards out of the 30 they were nominated for.
Amazon’s recent The Rings of Power series received mixed reviews from critics and audiences. It currently stands at 6.9/10 on IMDB. Many fans felt that it did not replicate the quality of Jackson’s trilogy.

What Are The New Lord Of The Rings Movies About?

Of course, the natural conclusion many fans will draw from the announcement of new movies is that they will be remakes of Peter Jackson’s beloved trilogy. But comments by Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy, the heads of Warner Bros. film division, indicate there is every chance the new films will take a different direction.

Warner Bros. are yet to confirm the setting and plot details of the upcoming Tolkien movies. They are still in the very early stages of development.
However, the studio said: “For all the scope and detail lovingly packed into the two trilogies [Jackson’s LoTR and The Hobbit], the vast, complex and dazzling universe dreamed up by JRR Tolkien remains largely unexplored.”
These comments indicate that the new movies are unlikely to be fresh adaptions of Tolkien’s most famous trilogy.

With Peter Jackson’s The Lord Of The Rings trilogy being held in such high regard, fans are eager to know if he is involved with, or is having any input to, the newly announced movies.
Producers of Amazon’s The Rings Of Power TV series famously ghosted Jackson from their production after initially approaching him about being involved. Many feel the series was worse off because of it.
As a result, it is only natural that fans of the original trilogy want to see Jackson involved with Warner Bros’ new Tolkien projects in some way.

Fans can breathe a sigh of relief – Peter Jackson and his team have confirmed their involvement with the development of the new The Lord Of The Rings movies.
Speaking to Variety, Jackson and collaborators Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens said that Embrace and Warner Bros. “have kept us in the loop every step of the way.”
“We look forward to speaking with them further to hear their vision for the franchise moving forward,” they added.

Currently, there is no release date for the new films. However, fans keen for more Middle-Earth don’t have to wait long. A new animated movie – The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim – is due to land in theatres in April 2024.
