Remember that incredible gameplay video that got everyone hyped for the release of Watch Dogs? We certainly do. It offered a glimpse of a game that never really came to fruition, even two sequels later. And now it looks like we’ve seen the last of Watch Dogs with a reputable insider stating that the series is “dead and buried”.

YouTuber, streamer, and reputable Ubisoft leaker j0nathan responded to a question on X that asked about another Watch Dogs game. In his response (auto-translated from French), j0nathan wrote: “Watch Dogs is normally dead and buried. Legion’s failure destroyed the projects on the license (including a fairly original Battle Royale)”.

While there has been no official word on the future of the series from publisher Ubisoft, the latest entry in the series, Watch Dogs Legion, received decidedly mixed reviews from critics. Since then, there hasn’t been any news about a future instalment in the series.

With word coming from j0nathan (who leaked details of Assassin’s Creed Mirage ahead of release) that there are no plans for more games, it’s probably safe to assume that the lacklustre reaction to Watch Dogs Legion brought an end to a series that never lived up to the original trailers.

The first game in the series arrived in 2014 to significant anticipation; however, it was immediately criticised for perceived graphical and gameplay downgrades from what was shown in pre-launch materials.

Of course, it’s always possible that Watch Dogs will be revived at some point in the future. But for now, it seems like we’ve seen the last of the series.
