The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is finally here. After what has felt like an eternity of anticipation, fans are at last able to venture back to Middle-earth. The new series tells a story many fans of the previous cinematic adaptions will be unfamiliar with. As a result, there are characters many won’t have seen or heard of before. One of these is Adar. So, who is Adar in The Rings of Power?

Firstly, let’s discuss The Rings of Power and how it fits into the wider The Lord of the Rings universe.

Amazon’s new TV show for Prime is set during the Second Age. This is thousands of years before the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, which take place during the Third Age.

While viewers will undoubtedly be familiar with the events of those films – as well as the books they’re based on – The Rings of Power isn’t based on any one specific work by J.R.R. Tolkien.

Instead, The Rings of Power combines material and lore from The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings and its appendices to create its narrative.

In episode 3 – “Adar” – Arondir has been captured by Orcs in the Southlands and forced into slavery. He is made to dig tunnels and cut down trees. The orcs mention a mysterious figure called Adar. This prompts speculation from Arondir and his fellow prisoners.

But who is Adar in The Rings of Power? After all, this is the first time the character has been mentioned in the series. Allow us to explain…

Who is Adar in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power?

Adar’s identity isn’t revealed in the episode. However, there are strong hints at who Adar is – and it’s clear they are likely to be a key character in The Rings of Power.

Who is Adar in The Rings of Power? When Arondir and the other prisoners hear the name “Adar”, they believe it could be Sauron. That’s because Adar (an Elvish word) was a former name of Sauron.

However, at the end of episode 3, Arondir attempts to escape captivity. After putting up a fierce fight, the Orcs finally restrain him. They take him to Adar. Before the episode finishes, Adar is seen approaching Arondir as the Orcs chant his name.

Unfortunately, Adar’s face is obscured by a blur effect. So it’s impossible to tell exactly who Adar is. Having said that, Adar appears to be an Elf or Human, has black hair, and looks tall and pale. Whether this is Sauron (in a different form) or someone else is unclear.

Hopefully we’ll learn Adar’s true identity in the next episode.
