HBO’s The Last Of Us TV series has been years in the making but it is finally here. Despite astronomically high fan expectations and stellar reviews that seemed too good to be true, the first episode was resoundingly well received by viewers. Many are calling it the best video game adaption of all time.
After watching episode one myself, I’m happy to confirm it delivered.
The Last Of Us Part I and Part II are truly spectacular games. What’s more, they’re wrapped up in a cinematic style that’s been crying out for a TV or movie adaption.
The new HBO show takes the best bits from the games and transports them into the medium of TV without missing a beat. What’s more, any changes that have been made only serve to make The Last Of Us work as a TV series. All in all, it is off to a flying start.
The Last Of Us tells the story of Joel and Ellie, two survivors of a worldwide pandemic caused by the contagious Cordyceps fungus.
The show picks up twenty years after the onset of the pandemic and the world has been devastated. Millions are dead or have been transformed into zombie-like creatures called “Infected”.
Joel and Ellie must embark on a journey across post-apocalyptic America. However, they must overcome the deadly Infected and merciless killers along the way.
After the time jump, much has changed. Joel is in a quarantine zone in Boston, Massachusetts, which is now just crumbling ruins.
The zone is ran by a sinister military organisation called FEDRA, which viewers new to The Last of Us won’t be familiar with.
FEDRA is shown to take drastic measures to keep the quarantine zone secure, including executions. But what is FEDRA in The Last of Us?
What is FEDRA in The Last of Us?
By 2023, the United States government has all but collapsed and the country is a mostly lawless wasteland. The only remaining semblance of order is FEDRA, which oversees numerous quarantine zones (QZs).
This is what FEDRA is in The Last of Us. FEDRA is the Federal Disaster Response Agency. It is one of few remaining bodies of the United States government, which it has effectively replaced. It is responsible for the administration and protection of quarantine zones across the United States.
FEDRA also forms part of the remnants of the United States military in The Last of Us and operates as an authoritarian regime in QZs. It inflicts harsh punishment on those conspiring against them or attempting to escape.
They are at odds with militia and guerrilla groups, including the Fireflies.
In the games, FEDRA is just one of many antagonistic factions Joel and Ellie must fight against. Its role in the TV show appears largely identical. That means FEDRA will likely remain a part of the story throughout season one.
