It’s been nearly six months since Mytona and Fntastic announced their post-apocalyptic zombie MMO game, The Day Before, for Steam. The trailer debuted to considerable hype. Many gamers speculated it could be the open-world online The Last of Us fans of the genre have been waiting for. While it bears no relation to The Last of Us‘ universe or Naughty Dog, there is an undeniable similarity. And if that wasn’t enough to get your attention, the trailers have offered a compelling glimpse of The Day Before‘s gameplay and gorgeous graphics, too.
Developer Fntastic are pretty much unknown. Outside of Radiant One, a mobile game, and The Wild Eight, a top down, low-poly PC survival game, they haven’t done anything of note. Similarly, publisher Mytona have only previously released mobile games. While it doesn’t fill you with confidence, it’s refreshing to see new studios pivot towards traditional games over mobile. And from what we’ve seen so far of The Day Before, they might be on to something.
The Day Before – other than being an MMO – is conceptually nothing new. It’s The Last of Us meets The Division. But it’s that multiplayer element that has people excited. So, what do we know about The Day Before?
The Day Before game trailer
Here is the announcement trailer for The Day Before. It shows some great looking gameplay including combat with other players and zombies, as well as looting and crafting.
Gameplay
As an MMO, The Day Before focuses on co-op and multiplayer. No information has been provided on potential offline play. Outside of the initial 5-minute trailer, The Day Before gameplay had been quite scarce. Luckily for us, Fntastic released an additional 13-minute gameplay trailer back in April. The new The Day Before trailer is here.
Driving
The new gameplay trailer showed some impressive footage. Not only did the The Day Before‘s graphics look great, but the gameplay did too. As the trailer started, players saw in game driving of both a 4×4 and a pick up truck over challenging terrain. For an open-world zombie MMO, strong driving mechanics are surely a must – and The Day Before looks like it delivers. There was even a brief glimpse of vehicle repair which adds a nice bit of depth. Hopefully its driving rivals the fun found in Days Gone.
Looting, scavenging and crafting
Looting and scavenging is a prominent feature of The Day Before. It’s something you’d expect from a post-apocalyptic game, and it certainly hasn’t been missed here. The new trailer shows the player looting a gas station before using their salvage to repair the aforementioned 4×4. We also got a look at the inventory management and crafting menus.
Combat
On top of that, we also saw more combat with the player fighting off hoards of zombies using an assault rifle and a pistol. The zombie gameplay doesn’t appear to be anything groundbreaking. There’s nothing new here like The Last of Us provided back in 2013. But it seems to work – and that may well be good enough for most. There was also a brief glimpse of PvP when other players turned up at a house the player was looting. This caused them to flee to a secure bunker nearby. The trailer ends abruptly with the player descending into the bunker as the enemy’s police car sirens blare in the background. It certainly got us excited to be a post-apocalyptic zombie cop!
The Day Before game release date
“When is The Day Before coming out?” has been a hot question since the release of the first trailer. The announced release date is Q2 2021. If that is to be believed, it means we will be playing Fntastic’s new video game before the end of June this year. The Day Before game PS5, PS4, Xbox One and Xbox Series X
Will The Day Before game be on PS5 and PS4?
Unfortunately, it isn’t looking likely that The Day Before will be coming to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. Thus far, the game has only been confirmed for PC via Steam. No PS4 or PS5 release date has been given.
While there’s no hope for PS4 players, those lucky enough to have a PS5 may get to play The Day Before in the future. Developer Fntastic recently said they were considering next-gen consoles, although a definitive announcement is yet to be made. Still, there’s hope The Day Before may be coming to PS5 after its PC release date in Q2 2021.
Will The Day Before game be on Xbox One and Xbox Series X?
Fans have been wanting to know: Is The Day Before coming to Xbox? And they are likely to be disappointed. Just as with the PS4 and PS5, no release date has been confirmed for the game on Xbox. There is, however, that slim chance we may see The Day Before on the Xbox Series X after its PC release date.
The Day Before game story and setting
Story
The official story synopsis for The Day Before reads:
“Welcome to The Day Before, an open-world MMO survival set in a deadly, post-pandemic America overrun by flesh-hungry infected and survivors killing each other for food, weapons, and cars. You wake up alone in a world you no longer remember, setting out to find answers and the resources to survive.”
While it doesn’t provide much in the way of detail, it does imply there’s more to The Day Before than just its gameplay. Exactly what answers awaits players when they dive into the game’s zombie filled world remains to be seen. But that story element does add a much needed layer of intrigue to the game: What happened to the world, how did it end up like this, why did people become zombies in The Day Before?
Setting
Where is The Day Before set? As the synopsis says, The Day Before takes place in a post-pandemic America full of zombies. Thus far, we’ve seen rural countryside, farmhouses, and a dilapidated city. The city portion of The Day Before looks like New York. So, we wouldn’t be surprised if The Day Before is set in post-pandemic New York.
As a funny aside, the game’s title does oddly contradict its setting. Surely it should be: The Day After?
