With the release of Tekken 8, many gamers will be considering checking out the series for the first time.

After all, it has received rave reviews from fans and critics alike. However, one thing tends to put players off fighting games – difficulty.

There is a perception that fighting games are extremely tough to master, particularly when it comes to online play.

That’s because games like Tekken and Street Fighter tend to have thriving competitive scenes with players who have honed their skills over many years.

But that shouldn’t dissuade you from checking them out, as gaming TikToker TheRedMonkey has explained in a new video that has attracted almost 30K likes and over 350K views.

Responding to a comment claiming that Tekken players “gotta have a phd” to perform a combo, TheRedMonkey broke things down with some useful advice.

He said: “Bro, you do not need a PhD to learn this game. I’mma put you on game, man.”

TheRedMonkey then began scrolling through one of Tekken 8‘s seemingly endless move lists, sympathising that “I know, man, I know these combos look intimidating[…] But I’mma tell you something I wish somebody would have told me when I was trying to learn fighting games when I was younger.”

“You do not have to learn all these damn moves”, he said. “You’re never gonna use all these moves in one match.”

Instead, he advised players to master five combos including “some lows, some highs, a couple mids. Get you like 2, 3 strings that can get in the good damage. That’s all you need.”

But the most mind-blowing Tekken 8 tip was still to come. Explaining the simple way of executing combos that require multiple buttons, TheRedMonkey explained that “Controller Setup is your best friend.”

That’s because Controller Setup allows you to completely remap the game’s controls. With this setting, you can even map two buttons (such as square and triangle) onto one button (such as L1). “You can turn two buttons into one, man! That’s all I’m saying. You can make this game as easy as you want.”

So, there you have it. Some awesome advice for anyone struggling to master multi-button combos in Tekken 8.

TheRedMonkey wrapped the TikTok video up with a key lesson for any fighting game: “You’re gonna take some Ls. You have to lose to win. You gotta learn from your mistakes. You can sit here and learn all the combos you want, you know what I’m saying? But you gotta learn when to execute them and when not to. All of this takes time.”

Tekken 8 is available now for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Now we’re off to take a look at our controller setup!
