Ghost of Tsushima was a resounding success for developer Sucker Punch Productions. The samurai action-adventure game launched in 2020 to great reviews. It has since gone on to sell more than eight million copies and gained a loyal following. However, Ghost of Tsushima‘s success spells bad news for Sucker Punch’s other popular franchises – Infamous and Sly Cooper.
The company recently shared a blog post on their website outlining plans for Infamous 2 user-generated content. It announced the game’s servers were being moved to “new home that will keep them up and running a bit longer.” While that’s good news for those still playing Infamous 2, Sucker Punch added that the servers will ultimately be closed. “We will eventually need to sunset these, but want to keep them running for as long as possible for players who are still active.”
Sucker Punch ends Infamous and Sly Cooper
Alongside the Infamous 2 announcement, Sucker Punch also confirmed the end (at least of now) of Infamous and Sly Cooper. “We have no plans to revisit inFAMOUS or Sly Cooper right now”, it said in the official blog post. Unfortunately, it’s not just Sucker Punch that won’t be working on those games. The company continued: “no other studio is currently working on projects related to those franchises either.”
Sucker Punch made it clear it cares a lot about those franchises, adding that it would “never say never” down the road. But “for now there are no inFAMOUS or Sly Cooper games in development.”
Why won’t Sucker Punch make Infamous or Sly Cooper?
Sucker Punch also shared its reasons for moving away from Infamous and Sly Cooper. It noted that its focus is on its “current project.” The company explained: “As our games continue to grow in scale and complexity, they require the full attention of our studio.”
As for what the developer’s current project is, every indication is that it’s likely Ghost of Tsushima 2. Job listings recently appeared online which suggested the game is already being made. That’s because the company is seeking applicants familiar with their previous games’ combat systems. Sucker Punch is also hoping to attract recruits with experience of working on action, stealth, melee, and open-world focused games. That certainly sounds like it could be Ghost of Tsushima 2 it’s hiring for.
It has been a while since we’ve seen anything from either Infamous or Sly Cooper. So, this announcement should come as little surprise. The last Sly Cooper game was Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time. This was developed by Sanzaru Games for PS3 and PS Vita, and was released in early 2013. The final Sucker Punch-developed Sly Cooper title was 2005’s Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves for PS2. The last full Infamous game – Infamous Second Son – was released for PS4 in March 2014. This was followed by a standalone ‘companion’ prequel – Infamous Last Light – which arrived in August 2014.
