A streamer has found a potential hint that Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 could in some way feature the 9/11 terror attacks.
Elliot Dunn (@deathmonk92) found the clue inside the mysterious submarine that has appeared in Rebirth Island as part of a wider Black Ops 6 easter egg.
He noticed that a computer screen on-board the submarine highlights the number ‘911’. “Within the Rebirth submarine… there’s a certain screen that is constantly scrolling upwards… one number specifically stands out, highlighted in red… 911,” Dunn explained in a summary video on his YouTube channel.
He admitted that this “could mean a lot of things” such as the American emergency services number. However, he pointed out that it would be “highly unlikely” given that Call of Duty is a war game and not rooted in law enforcement.
While it might seem like a stretch, this isn’t the first 9/11 hint we’ve seen in Black Ops 6 marketing.
Eagle-eyed social media sleuths spotted a hidden detail in key art that was released last month.
The artwork, which seemed to simply be of the Black Ops 6 logo, actually had the date “2001” and what appeared to be “/11” written in small text in the background.
While none of this directly references the horrific events of 11 September, 2001, it’s important to note that Black Ops 6‘s marketing material – which has featured real-life political leaders such as George H.W. Bush, Margaret Thatcher, Saddam Hussein, and Bill Clinton – indicates that the game will take place during the Gulf War of the early 1990s.
The events, outcome, and aftermath of the Gulf War played into Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda’s hostilities towards the west in subsequent years. Consequently, it would not be surprising to see 9/11 feature in the game in some form.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 will launch in October 2024 for the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. It will also be available to Xbox Game Pass subscribers on release day.
