Slide Cancel is coming back to Call of Duty in MW3, apparently

Slide cancelling, the controversial Call of Duty movement mechanic/exploit, will apparently return to the series in the all but confirmed Modern Warfare III. “Slide cancel” refers to the ability to stop a slide movement mid-motion – and many players will be delighted to hear it may be coming back.

That’s because slide cancelling can provide a powerful tactical advantage during fast-paced confrontations in-game. It allows players to take advantage of the rapid and low sliding motion while preserving the ability to immediately stop and ADS (aim down sights) if required.

While it existed prior to Call of Duty: Warzone‘s release, slide cancelling became increasingly prevalent during the early days of the then-brand new battle royale. As both Black Ops Cold War and Vanguard linked with the original Warzone, slide cancelling remained in Call of Duty until the release of Modern Warfare II in October 2022.

The sliding mechanic, while present in MWII, could not be interrupted by players. This effectively removed slide cancelling from MWII and Warzone 2.0.

Warzone 2.0 has faced near-endless criticism since its launch. Many players have cited the removal of features such as slide cancelling and the minimisation of Warzone‘s skill gap as the reason for its decline in popularity.

However, after almost a year since MWII‘s launch, it seems Activision is teasing the return of slide cancelling for the next Call of Duty game.

Is Slide Cancel coming back in Modern Warfare III (MW3)?

Activision has not officially confirmed the return of slide cancelling in Modern Warfare III.

However, a popular Call of Duty streamer received a package from Activision on 6th August 2023 which seems to hint at its imminent comeback.

The package, opened by FaZe Swagg, contained a pair of sliders, a can, and a cell phone. While these objects may seem irrelevant at first, the CoD community soon put two and two together.

Call of Duty news account ModernWarzone tweeted: “They sent @Swagg a pair of slides, a can and a cell phone. Slide + Can + Cell = Slide cancel confirmed?”

Similarly, CharlieIntel commented: “Slides + Can + Cell Phone = Slide Cancel in Modern Warfare III”.

Reportedly, the cell phone FaZe Swagg received also contained a text message stating that “you will be expected to move more quickly in Al Mazrah.”

This seems to provide further credence to theories that slide cancelling is set to return in 2023’s MW3.

For now, we just have to wait for Activision to confirm whether the infamous slide cancel ability is coming back. In the meantime, CoD fans can expect plenty more teases regarding Modern Warfare III.
