The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has been with us for over ten years. And in that time it’s earned its reputation as one of the best open world RPGs ever made. That’s because it gave players a deep and rich world with absolutely tonnes to discover. Even now, all these years later, fans are coming across things they didn’t know before. With it being over a decade since Skyrim‘s release, what better time than now to go back and look at some of the most interesting Skyrim trivia that you may not know. Without further ado, here are 5 astonishing facts about Skyrim

Skyrim Trivia: 5 Interesting Facts About Skyrim

5. Skyrim’s giants are modelled after a real person!

Skyrim is set in the fantasy world of Tamriel, a world inhabited by many weird and wonderful creatures. Some of the most fearsome are the dangerous Giants. But it may interest you to know that their look is based on a real person.

Jonah Lobe, one of the 3D artists for the game, decided to model Skyrim‘s Giants on his father, Jim Lobe. Jonah reportedly first revealed the information on Twitch before taking to Twitter to confirm it as a fact. His Dad must have had a giant presence in his life.

4. Parents named their child “Dovahkiin” and won a lifetime supply of Bethesda games

This piece of Skyrim trivia is probably the most unbelievable. You read that right – a set of parents decided to name their child “Dovahkiin” (meaning Dragonborn) to commemorate the release of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

Back in 2011, Bethesda ran a unique competition. If someone had a child on 11/11/11 (Skyrim‘s release day) and named that baby Dovahkiin, the publisher would give them a lifetime of Bethesda games for free. Eric and Megan Kellermeyer took Bethesda up on their promise and their newborn became the Dragonborn. As a result, they now have “a Steam key that will grant you, and presumably Dovahkiin him/herself, every ZeniMax/Bethesda game – past, present and future – for life.”

3. A 3D artist wrote his name on the game’s Dragonplate Armor

Jonah Lobe strikes again! The same Skyrim 3D artist who modelled the Giants after his dad also wrote his own name (in Dragon language) on the armbands of the game’s Dragonplate armor.

2. The White-Gold Tower of Cyrodiil can be visited in Skyrim via console commands

This piece of Skyrim trivia should excite fans of other games in the Elder Scrolls series.

Cyrodiil is the Imperial Province of Tamriel and is the setting of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Despite not actually featuring in Skyrim‘s story, Cyrodiil’s White-Gold Tower – which is situated in the Imperial City – can be seen and even visited.

The untextured version of the tower exists outside the game’s map. However, it can only be accessed by editing the game’s files and using console commands. Once players have gotten outside the world’s borders, they can approach the low resolution tower. Although it looks significantly less splendid than it did in Oblivion.

1. A Skyrim NPC is named after a fan who died

Erik West, whose online name was “Immok The Slayer”, visited Bethesda offices as part of a Make-a-Wish visit. During his trip, he impressed Bethesda staff so much with his knowledge of Oblivion that they decided to include him in Skyrim.

Unfortunately, Erik died before the release of Skyrim in November 2011. But “Erik The Slayer” – the NPC named after him – will live on forever in the game.
