Rockstar Confirm Focus On GTA 6, Ending Red Dead Online Updates

The time has finally arrived. Rockstar is officially ending major content updates for Red Dead Online to fully-focus on the development of GTA 6.

The state and quality of ongoing support for Red Dead Online has been a sore subject among fans for some time. But now we know for sure that Rockstar’s priorities are elsewhere.

In a community update on the company’s official website, Rockstar announced changes are coming to the way they support Red Dead Online. It cited the next Grand Theft Auto as the primary reason for this.

Rockstar fully-focussed on GTA 6

“Over the past few years, we have been steadily moving more development resources towards the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series — understanding more than ever the need to exceed players’ expectations and for this next entry to be the best it can possibly be — and as a result, we are in the process of making some changes to how we support Red Dead Online.”

Recent reports suggest Red Dead Redemption and GTA 4 remasters were scrapped so resources could be directed to GTA 6‘s development. And Rockstar’s latest announcement makes it clear the next Grand Theft Auto is its priority.

The company continued:

“Firstly, with both new and experienced players engaging in the wealth of activities already added to this massively rich world including Specialist Roles, story-based cooperative missions, competitive Showdown Modes, and much more, we will continue to showcase these unique additions through Red Dead Online’s monthly events as we move forward, so players of all levels can enjoy everything the vast frontier has to offer.”

Red Dead Online support will go on, but only in the form of enhancements to the game’s existing content. Rockstar explained:

“Alongside seasonal special events and experience improvements — plus other changes to enhance and maintain a healthy Red Dead Online environment — we plan to build upon existing modes and add new Telegram Missions this year, rather than delivering major themed content updates like in previous years, and we will continue to highlight and share the creative efforts of our Red Dead community at every opportunity via the Newswire and beyond.”

Rockstar cease major Red Dead Online updates

The news that major updates for Red Dead Online are no more will be disappointing for its dedicated players. However, the game has failed to replicate the financial success of GTA Online.

As a result, Rockstar has never been as committed to the former as it has been to the latter. Elsewhere in the blog post, the company had plenty of good news for GTA Online.

“… we’ll be working to improve the overall GTA Online experience with new gameplay updates, adding top community-requested experience improvements and upgrades to make it easier for players to enjoy everything GTA Online has to offer.”

Rockstar also confirmed a major update that’s just “a few short weeks” away. It “will expand upon the Criminal Careers of Executive, Biker, Gunrunner, and Nightclub Owner”.

The update will also include “a set of Contact Missions that presents the opportunity to be sworn in as a special IAA field operative to investigate a budding criminal conspiracy.”
