This article explaining what happened to Tony Swan in Reacher contains major spoilers.
The final episode of Reacher at last revealed the fate of the mysterious Tony Swan. Season 2 on Amazon Prime Video has been a non-stop thrill ride and has been widely praised by fans.
It followed the eponymous Jack Reacher as he reunited with his former unit – the Special Investigators – to find out why its members were being hunted and killed.
As Reacher and his team began to uncover a complex political conspiracy about an advanced weapons system (codenamed Little Wing), the allegiance and loyalties of their former comrade Tony Swan were called into question.
While Swan isn’t seen in the present day, his involvement with Reacher’s unit is shown through a series of flashbacks.
It is soon revealed that Swan works as the Assistant Director of Security at New Age Technologies, the company handling the Little Wing defense contract. Curiously, he is nowhere to be found.
Early in the season, Reacher found his home abandoned. Swan’s dog was left to die from dehydration, which alarmed Reacher who thought Swan could never let that happen.
Reacher’s unit continued to look into Swan’s involvement with New Age. David O’Donnell in particular become increasingly pessimistic of his motives.
In the Season 2 finale – “Fly Boy” – Swan’s fate was explained by villain Shane Langston. So, what exactly happened to him?
What happened to Tony Swan in the Season 2 finale of Reacher?
In the Season 2 finale of Reacher, Shane Langston reveals to Reacher, Dixon, and O’Donnell that he killed Swan. Langston did this when he discovered Swan had contacted members of the Special Investigators to look into his activities.
He offered to cut Swan in, but he declined. After Swan was dead, he decided to frame him. So, Langston kept one of Swan’s eyes and a finger.
Langston used these to bypass biometric security measures on Swan’s computer and inside New Age buildings. By doing this, he could sign documents in Swan’s name and make it look as if Swan was still alive and actively working at New Age.
After Langston’s explanation, Reacher, Dixon, and O’Donnell managed to escape and a fight ensued with Langston’s men. During the chaos, Langston asks one of his goons to flush Swan’s finger and eye away.
Ultimately, this confirms that Swan was not corrupt after all. He was, in fact, working to investigate Langston and Little Wing and this is what got him killed.
This means Reacher’s assumptions about him were correct all along and that he did not betray his unit.
