Reacher: Did Russo die in episode 6? Explained

Russo in Reacher Season 2.

This Reacher article explaining if Russo died contains major spoilers.

Reacher‘s second season is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video. We’re now six episodes in and it has been an epic ride so far. With just two episodes left, the dramatic climax of the season is on its way.

As the Special Investigators close in on Shane Langston, they begin to work even more closely with NYPD officer Guy Russo.

Episode 6 – “New York’s Finest” – saw Russo confront his boss, Lieutenant Marsh, about his involvement with Langston. Ultimately, this led to the episode’s cliffhanger ending and the apparent death of Russo.

Before we discuss “did Russo die?”, it’s worth breaking down his role in this week’s episode and what exactly happened with his character.

What did Russo do in episode 6?

In episode 6, Russo provides Reacher with the location of Marlo Burns’ car. He then tells Reacher that he has to go and see someone.

Later in the episode, Russo arrives at Lieutenant Marsh’s house. He confronts Marsh about his involvement with Langston and accuses him of setting Reacher’s team up at the cemetery and taking bribes.

Marsh claims that he wasn’t responsible for the ambush at Franz’s funeral, but confesses that he took bribes from Langston in exchange for providing updates about Reacher. He explains that he had no choice as Langston and his men are dangerous.

Russo is furious about this and argues that Marsh is indirectly supporting terrorists in exchange for money. Marsh attempts to persuade Russo to take bribes from Langston but he refuses.

Towards the end of the episode, Reacher goes to see Russo to inform him of their upcoming meeting with Langston. He asks him to watch Jane, the daughter of Marlo Burns. He agrees, although he says they can’t stay at his home. Russo tells Reacher that Marsh confessed to being on Langston’s payroll and that he attempted to convince Russo to join him in taking bribes.

For this reason, he is concerned for his safety and says he will take Jane to his cousin’s house on Staten Island. When Russo and Jane leave, they are tailed and shot at by Langston’s men.

Did Russo die in episode 6 of Reacher?

Russo attempts to escape from Langston’s men and calls Reacher’s team for back up. Before long, they block Russo’s car in and prevent him from fleeing. He attempts to fight them off and decides to get Jane out of the car. He tells her to run as fast as she can while he shoots at Langston’s men.

He kills them, but not before they shoot and injure him. Jane is almost caught by one of the assailants but Reacher’s unit run him over just in time.

Russo is found bleeding out on the ground by Neagley. O’Donnell informs Neagley that an ambulance is on the way but Russo appeared to succumb to his injuries before it arrived and died with Neagley holding his hand.

While it seems that Russo did, in fact, die, the episode’s ending was ambiguous. The cliffhanger conclusion was certainly designed to make viewers question Russo’s fate, therefore we wouldn’t be surprised to see him alive in next week’s episode.
