One of PlayStation’s biggest selling points is its extensive catalogue of high-quality exclusive games. And until recently, some absolute classics have been restricted to Sony’s consoles.
However, over the last couple of years, the company has slowly been releasing PC ports of some of the hottest PlayStation-only titles. Now a data leak has revealed a huge PS5 exclusive is coming to Steam.
Sony hasn’t shied away from releasing some of its top games on PC. After all, there’s clearly a huge market for first-rate AAA games on the platform. Recent PC ports include God of War (2018), Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection, Horizon Zero Dawn, Days Gone, and Death Stranding. With this new addition, PC gamers finally have a chance to enjoy one of the best PS5 exclusives to date.
PS5 Exclusive Coming To PC
Information gathered from data aggregator steamdb.info has revealed new files that have been added to the Steam database for a game codenamed “Oregon”. From the title, it’s unclear exactly what the game is. However, further snooping inside the game’s files have unveiled the mystery game.
The PS5 exclusive coming to Steam is, in fact, Returnal.
This has been confirmed through localisation strings in the game’s listing. Localisation strings are sets of values that are used for in-game languages.
By deciphering them, the contents of the game can be revealed. From this, it is clear that “Oregon” is a PC port of Returnal.
The localisation strings include words and phrases such as ‘Atropos’, ‘In Helios’, and ‘Tower of Sisyphus’. For anyone who knows Returnal, these phrases are instantly recognisable.
What is Returnal?
Returnal is a sci-fi third person shooter roguelike from Finnish developers Housemarque. It originally came out back in April 2021 and received great reviews on release – we scored it 9.5/10.
The game is set on the far flung planet of Atropos. ASTRA Corporation explorer Selene Vassos crash lands on the planet and must fight her way through hordes of alien enemies to find a way off the ever-shifting extraterrestrial world.
Returnal is a tough game – every time Selene dies, she returns back to where she started. However, the world around her has shifted. Nothing is as it was. This makes planning and strategising virtually impossible. Couple that with its fast-paced and varied combat, and you have a recipe for a hard but incredibly fun and satisfying experience. The game looks gorgeous, too.
When Is Returnal Coming To PC?
While it is all but officially confirmed that Returnal is coming to PC, it isn’t clear exactly when.
Currently, neither Housemarque nor Sony has made an announcement about the impending Returnal PC port. Presumably, it will be revealed sooner than later with the Steam files being updated on a daily basis.
The reveal could come at Sony’s next PlayStation Showcase. Although, it’s also possible that it could be announced sooner.
To give an idea of release timeframes, God of War‘s PC port was announced in October 2021. It then arrived on Steam three months later on 14th January 2022.
