A player has caught a shiny Mewtwo in Pokémon Fire Red – and it only took them 4649 tries.
The feat was achieved by shiny Pokémon hunter and TikTok user @shinywrld where they shared footage of their incredible achievement.
In the clip, the player encounters the legendary shiny Pokémon in Cerulean Cave after performing a soft reset of their game more than 4000 times in a process that took “about a year and a half”.
Soft resetting is a method for catching legendary shiny Pokémon. Shinies only appear in 1 out of every 8192 encounters. For most creatures, walking around repeatedly in wild areas is the standard method of finding a shiny variant. Because many legendaries, like this Mewtwo, only appear once and in a set location, players must save the game and perform a “soft reset” until they get a shiny.
In the video, @shinywrld faces Mewtwo with an Articuno. Despite the fact he has three Master Balls in his bag, he opted to hit the rare shiny with two unnecessary Ice Beam attacks before using a Master Ball for the guaranteed catch.
In the comments, people shared their shock at this risky move. “How could you possibly risk that 2nd ice beam after a year of trying,” said one TikTok user. “2nd ice beam was genuinely insane,” said another.
Luckily, the second Ice Beam was not a critical hit. The player then decided it was time to get the job done and caught the incredibly rare Pokémon.
