Sony has revealed the release date and price of the PlayStation VR2 virtual reality headset in a new PlayStation Blog post.
The new kit is the successor to 2016’s PlayStation VR headset which has sold more than 5 million units worldwide.
While that might sound like a lot, it still pales in comparison to the 106 million (as of December 2019) PlayStation 4 consoles sold. But VR is still a relatively new consumer technology – and gamers are yet to see it as a must-have.
However, that could be set to change with PlayStation VR2 which promises an innovative, next-generation approach to VR gaming.
Early previews for the PS VR2 have been met with positive reception. Particular praise has been directed towards the new Sense controllers (which have haptics similar to the PS5’s DualSense). CNET writer Scott Stein explained, “Through all the games I played, I realized this was where VR haptics needed to be from now on.”
With all the buzz, gamers have been eager to know when they can get their hands on the headset. And more importantly, how much it will cost.
On November 2nd, Sony announced details of PlayStation VR2’s launch including its release date and retail price.
PlayStation VR2 Release Date
The PlayStation VR2 won’t be available for Christmas. But consumers won’t have to wait too long to get their hands on one.
The PS VR2 is set to launch on February 22nd 2023, just over a year after it was first announced.
There should also be a fair number of VR games for players to sink their teeth into on day one. Regarding the number of PS VR2 titles on release, Sony said:
We’re expecting more than 20 titles at launch, and we can’t wait for February when PS VR2 launches so players can give it a try.

PlayStation VR2 Price
With the PlayStation VR2 launch just over four months away, there isn’t much time to start saving your pennies if you want to buy one. And you will need quite a few – because it has a pretty hefty price tag. In fact, it will cost more than a PlayStation 5 console.
The PlayStation VR2 is set to launch at $549.99 / €599.99 / £529.99 / ¥74,980.
This price will include the PS VR2 headset, PS VR2 Sense controllers, and stereo headphones.
The Horizon Call of the Mountain bundle comes in slightly more expensive but will give players a AAA game to try on day one. The bundle will have an RRP of $599.99 / €649.99 / £569.99 / ¥79,980.
PlayStation VR2 Specification
If you are considering purchasing the PlayStation VR2, you probably want to know what you can expect for your money.
The headset utilises a 4K OLED display with 2000×2040 resolution per eye with a 90Hz and 120Hz display refresh rate, and a field of view of roughly 110 degrees. The PS VR2 also has haptic feedback on the headset itself for added immersion.
Rather than using the external PlayStation Camera, the headset comes with four inbuilt cameras for headset and controller tracking, and IR cameras for eye tracking. It also uses a six-axis motion sensor system.
The PlayStation VR 2 only requires a single USB-C cable to connect to the PS5.
The Sense controllers use Bluetooth to communicate with the headset and offer haptics and trigger effects similar to the DualSense controller.
