After much anticipation, Sony has finally announced PlayStation Showcase 2021. The event will air on 9th September 2021 at 9pm UK, 1pm Pacific & 4pm Eastern time.
Sony missed this year’s E3 event, and outside of a July State of Play that showcased projects from smaller studios, we haven’t seen an awful lot to get excited about. Thankfully, PlayStation Showcase 2021 is just around the corner and the 40-minute event promises a “sneak peek at the future of PS5, with updates from PlayStation Studios and industry-leading devs”.
With that in mind, many fans will be asking, “what games will be at PlayStation Showcase 2021?” Well, the event is scheduled to showcase “games releasing this holiday and beyond.” So, let’s take a look at some of the possibilities.
PlayStation Showcase 2021 Games
God of War: Ragnarok
2018’s God of War was one of the PlayStation 4’s best games. And its sequel, God of War: Ragnarok, is sure to be equally as impressive. Up until now, we’ve seen very little of the new God of War game that was originally due to make waves on PlayStation 5 this year.
Currently, it’s scheduled to come out in 2022. And with Sony promising to showcase PS5 games of the future, God of War: Ragnarok will surely be top of the list.
Horizon: Forbidden West
Like God of War, the original Horizon was a massive success for Sony when it released back in 2017. Since then, Aloy has gone on to become a household name for gamers. Unlike God of War, we’ve seen a significant amount of Horizon: Forbidden West gameplay. But with the game scheduled to come out in February 2022, we should expect to see even more of it in the coming months to get the hype train moving.
With that being said, it’s only logical to assume we will see Horizon: Forbidden West at PlayStation Showcase 2021.
The Last of Us Remake
I’m not so convinced the original The Last of Us game even needs a remake. But with Naughty Dog being part of the PlayStation family and rumours of a remake swirling, it seems likely we will catch a glimpse of it at PlayStation Showcase 2021.
The Last of Us 2 was famously divisive. We LOVED it. But many others hated it. Naughty Dog may see a remake of the original game as a way of remedying some of that negative sentiment. And with the new TV series on the way, launching the remade game in parallel would make logical business sense, too.
Metal Gear Solid Remake
Metal Gear Solid is a series synonymous with PlayStation. The original game was probably the best game to ever grace the PS1. With Hideo Kojima now removed from Konami, a new entry in the series is unlikely. But, if rumours are true, that won’t stop Konami from remaking his magnum opus.
If Konami keep a Metal Gear Solid remake faithful to the original game, even as a Kojima loyalist, I wouldn’t have a problem with it. Shadow Moses is one of the all-time great video game settings and I would relish the opportunity to explore the island in next-gen detail. I, for one, hope to see a Metal Gear Solid remake at the PlayStation Showcase 2021.
Tekken 8
I recently wrote that Tekken 8 is long overdue. Tekken 7 came out way back in 2015 and we’re still yet to hear a peep about the eighth instalment in the beloved fighting franchise.
PlayStation 5 is undoubtedly lacking in the size of its game catalogue. And what better way to beef it out than with Tekken 8. Given the amount of time since the last game’s release, it seems logical to assume an announcement must be on the horizon. But then, Tekken games often grace arcades first, and we’ve seen nothing on that front either. Let’s manage our expectations.
Uncharted 5
Uncharted is one of PlayStation’s most highly regarded series. Fans have been clamouring for news on Uncharted 5 ever since the fantastic Chloe Frazier focussed spin-off, Uncharted: Lost Legacy, released back in 2017.
Naughty Dog’s co-presidents Neil Druckmann and Evan Wells recently did an interview with Game Informer where they strongly hinted at Uncharted 5 being a part of their future plans. “I think there’s excitement to develop new IP, but there is still a ton of love for Uncharted and The Last Of Us, and I think you’ll see both kinds of projects from us in the future,” Wells said.
With the PlayStation Showcase 2021 promising to deliver an exciting look at future PS5 games, what better way to round it off than with Uncharted 5? I think there’s a good chance fans haven’t seen the last of Nathan Drake.
