At The Game Awards 2023, Metal Gear Solid and Death Stranding creator Hideo Kojima announced OD, a new horror game that will be Kojima’s first since the cancelled Silent Hills project.

A live action trailer featuring Sophia Lillis (IT), Hunter Schafer (Euphoria), Udo Keir (character actor with more than 220 credits) as talking heads revealed the game as Kojima Production’s latest project working alongside Xbox Game Studios.

In the trailer, Lillis, Schafer and Keir repeat the words: “The hungry purple dinosaur ate the kind zingy fox, the jabbering crab, and the mad whale and started venting and quacking.”

At the end, Lillis lets out a terrified scream as an unknown figure opens a door in the distance (as seen in the reflection in her eyes). The trailer then explains that OD is “For all players and screamers”.

During the presentation, Hideo Kojima (after emerging from a Silent Hills-like door) described OD as a hybrid between a game, a movie and “a new form of media” that “no-one has seen before” made possible using Xbox’s cloud gaming technology.

Horror director Jordan Peele (Get Out, Us, Nope) made a surprise appearance on-stage and was revealed to have collaborated with Kojima on the project. “From the first moment I played Metal Gear Solid 2, I knew I was experiencing the work of an artist whose craft just hits different… The opportunity to collaborate with him is truly incredible,” Peel said.

He continued: “And what he’s [Kojima] cooking up here is completely immersive, utterly terrifying and I am absolutely honoured to be collaborating with the G.O.A.T – let’s go!”

On collaborating with Jordan Peele, Kojima said: “I grew up watching movies and I’m a game creator now. Jordan grew up playing games and he’s a movie director now. So, this two collaboration will be really awesome.”

Kojima hinted that are additional collaborators on the project, referring to them as “legends” and “the Avengers”.

In conclusion, Peele said: “I just wanna stress that what this man is building here is unlike any other game, it is going to be crazy.”
