Dragon Age: Dreadwolf, the first game in the series since 2014, has been retitled Dragon Age: The Veilguard – and BioWare are sharing over 15 minutes of gameplay on 11 June.
Posting to the official BioWare blog, the developer wrote: “Summer is nearly upon us, and as promised, we’re ready to provide an update on our big reveal. We’d like to invite the world to join us on Tuesday, June 11, for the official first look at gameplay for the next Dragon Age!”
Referencing the protracted development cycle of the game, the blog explains that after the launch of Dragon Age: Inquisition in 2014, “the studio was given an incredible opportunity to explore, test, and validate a variety of gameplay concepts as [they] worked to determine what the next Dragon Age could look like.” The developer added that this even included a multiplayer concept which was later scrapped.
BioWare apparently learnt a lot from their time experimenting with different ideas for the future of Dragon Age. However, they ultimately arrived at the decision to “re-focus on creating an incredible single player game, with all the choices, characters and world building you’d expect [from BioWare].”
The developer says that fans should expect “adventure, conflict and companionship” in the new standalone story, as well as a new hero, seven unique companions, and the aforementioned Dread Wolf.
In explaining the reason for the name change, BioWare wrote: “We changed the name as the original title didn’t show just how strongly we feel about our new heroes, their stories and how you’ll need to bring them together to save all of Thedas… We proudly introduce to you Dragon Age: The Veilguard.”
Presumably, “The Veilguard” will be the player character in the upcoming game, similar to The Warden, Hawke, and The Inquisitor from past titles.
The gameplay reveal will take place on 11 June at 8am PT on the Dragon Age YouTube channel.
