These days, Battlefield feels like a forgotten FPS franchise from a bygone era. Many fans of the series gave up on it after the disappointing launch of 2021’s Battlefield 2042.
However, Electronic Arts is going full steam ahead on the next Battlefield game which currently exists in a playable form.
EA CEO Andrew Wilson recently confirmed as much during the company’s quarterly earnings call on 7th May. He said: “A few weeks ago, I was visiting with the teams, and I couldn’t be more excited about what they showed and what we were able to play.”
Wilson also described the game as “another tremendous live service” after spending “a whole bunch of time with the collective Battlefield team playing what they’re building”.
While Wilson presumably thinks his comments will enthuse gamers for the upcoming title, they will likely have the opposite effect.
Faith in EA to produce quality Battlefield games has long since dissipated, with both Battlefield V and Battlefield 2042 receiving heavy criticism from fans at launch. Both games eventually improved but only after months and years of updates.
As such, the promise of yet another live service outing will do little to encourage the series’ jaded community. Players would far sooner have a well-rounded and complete multiplayer experience at launch than a release now/fix later live service that promises a roadmap of staggered and uninteresting content drops.
The setting and title of the next Battlefield are unknown and no specific details about it have been released. What we do know, however, is that “the largest Battlefield team in franchise history” is working on the game.
But aside from the acknowledgement by Andrew Wilson that players can expect another live service, we will have to wait and see what EA has planned.
We aren’t getting our hopes up.
