Call of Duty Warzone has evolved a lot since its initial release. During the COVID-19 lockdowns, fans got to know the original map, Verdansk, like their own backyard. After that original map, and a 1980s inspired reskin for Black Ops Cold War, came Caldera. Caldera took Warzone to the Pacific and back in time to World War II to coincide with the setting of 2021’s Call of Duty: Vanguard. Reception to Caldera has been mixed – some people love it and some hate it. And after six months of Caldera, players are starting to ask about a new Warzone map. With Warzone 2 reportedly releasing alongside 2022’s Modern Warfare 2, can fans expect a new Warzone map (or Caldera update) before then? And what do we know about the rumoured Warzone 2 map? Read on to find out…
Vanguard Warzone Map
The Vanguard Warzone map is Caldera – and it’s fair to say it’s had its share of problems.
On release, Caldera had a tremendous amount of bugs and glitches that immediately soured players on the new map. On top of that, many players believed it to be both smaller than Verdansk and contain fewer points of interest. Couple these factors together and you’ve got a recipe for a poorly received map.
Undoubtedly, Caldera has improved over the past few months. Raven have introduced new points of interest, addressed many of the bugs, and responded to player feedback to improve its overall feel. It’s not perfect – but then neither was Verdansk. Still, it would be great to see a World War II-inspired Verdansk and to return to there for the last few months of the original Warzone.
Warzone Map Update
Caldera received a refresh with the recent release of Warzone Pacific Season 3. It introduced a new colour pallet, a new location in the form of Dig Site, and updates to the existing Runway, Peak and Lagoon points of interest. But can players expect anything further?
Pacific Map
Traditional battle royale set in the pacific map of Caldera is Call of Duty Warzone‘s main mode. It’s also the mode fans are most interested in seeing a new Warzone map for. That’s because of the aforementioned problems that many players have with Caldera.
So, will there be a new Warzone map in the near future? At present, nothing official has been announced in regards to a new map for Warzone. It’s possible a new map may be released in one of the upcoming seasons prior to the launch of Warzone 2 – but that remains to be seen and it’s unlikely.
Rebirth Island Map
Unlike Caldera which received a refresh with Season 3 and Operation Monarch, the Rebirth Island map didn’t. While adjustments were made to gameplay mechanics like spawn protection and weapon trade stations, no new locations were added.
That said, it did receive a pretty substantial map refresh in Warzone Pacific Season 2 with the introduction of Rebirth Reinforced. This transformed the previous Security Area point of interest into Stronghold, and introduced Dock. Other changes included the introduction of Caldera’s redeploy balloons and Prison Yard being reinforced with more cover.
But could there be a new Rebirth Island map on the way? Currently, nothing official is on the cards with regards to a new Rebirth Island map.
Warzone Verdansk
Verdansk is the OG. It’s the map that introduced everyone to Warzone and it holds a special place in many players hearts.
After Black Ops Cold War came out back in 2020, Verdansk was reskinned to suit the 1980s setting. It even had its own version of Die Hard‘s Nakatomi Plaza. Many players expected Vanguard to usher in a World War II version of Verdansk. But that didn’t happen and we got Caldera instead.
While Verdansk remains the Warzone fan favourite map, it doesn’t look like Raven has any plans to reintroduce it prior to the launch of Warzone 2 later this year. It’s a shame because seeing a WW2 version of Verdansk would be pretty cool.
Warzone Game Modes
Currently, Call of Duty Warzone has four game modes: Operation Monarch, Rebirth Blood Money Quads, Rebirth Resurgence, and the traditional Battle Royale.
No new game modes have been announced but it’s always possible we’ll see more as Season 3 progresses and when the game moves into Season 4. As a result, it’s also possible we’ll get new/alternate Warzone maps to accompany any new game modes. As mentioned, though, nothing has been officially announced.
When is the new Call of Duty coming out?
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II is yet to receive an official release date. However, Call of Duty games always release in either October or November. So, minus any unexpected delays, the new Call of Duty should be coming out in October or November 2022.
Warzone 2 Release Date
It’s all but officially confirmed that Warzone 2 will be launching alongside Modern Warfare II in October or November 2022. While a Warzone 2 release date hasn’t been officially announced, it would make all the sense in the world to launch it in parallel to the flagship game.
Of course, it’s always possible that the Warzone 2 release date could be delayed just like Caldera was. Let’s just hope that whenever it launches, it’s in a good state.
New CoD Map
Thankfully, a new map is expected to arrive in Warzone 2. Reliable rumours and leaks also give us a good idea of what to expect in the new Warzone map – and it’s inspired by many classic MW2 locations.
Industry insider Tom Henderson has shared a list of points of interest rumoured to appear in the new Warzone 2 map:
- Airport (Terminal)
- Caves (Afgan)
- Dam
- Fishtown
- Fort
- Harbor
- Graveyard
- Marshes
- Modern City (Highrise)
- Mountain town (assumed Fevela)
- Oasis
- Observatory
- Oilfield
- Oldtown
- Quarry (Quarry)
- Shipwreck
- Sira
- Wartorn
Activison/Infinity Ward/Raven are yet to announce anything official – but this should give fans a good idea of what to expect in the upcoming game.
Is Warzone on Switch?
Some Nintendo Switch owners may want to know “is Warzone on Switch?” and, if so, does it have its own map? The answer is no. Warzone is not on Switch and it doesn’t appear to be on the cards anytime soon.
