New Tomb Raider Game Will Make Unexpected Changes To Series

It’s been almost four years since the last Tomb Raider outing. But now a surprise leak has provided unexpected details about a new Tomb Raider game.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider was released in 2018 and was the final instalment in the Survivor trilogy. While it was a good game, it was very similar to the previous two titles and it was clearly time for the series to do something different.

And it sounds like the next Tomb Raider will do just that. It was announced earlier this year and is currently being developed by Crystal Dynamics using Unreal Engine 5.

Unfortunately, no other information about the new game was released. But intriguing information has now found its way online. And we finally have an idea of what we can expect.

This new information comes courtesy of Colin Moriarty’s Sacred Symbols podcast (via VGC) details of a leaked script were discussed

So, what have we learnt about the new Tomb Raider game from this shock leak?

New Tomb Raider Game – What We Know

The script leaked to Moriarty revealed the game’s codename – Project Jawbreaker. Apparently, it will feature Lara Croft later in her career as a distinguished adventurer.

Lara will be in her mid-30s and after years of cultivating a “legendary career” is now “at the top of her game”.

One surprising change for the series will apparently be the introduction of younger tomb raiders. The script indicates they will work with Lara and act as a team during missions.

Exactly how this will play out in the game is unclear, but these characters will reportedly have speaking roles.

It appears Lara Croft is also being recast after three stellar performances from Camilla Luddington in the reboot trilogy. As for who (if anyone) has been cast as Lara or any of the other characters, we don’t know just yet.

Whoever ends up as Lara will supposedly be an “authentic British” actress. That’s because Crystal Dynamics is reportedly looking to cast someone similar to Emily Blunt or Rosamund Pike.

Significant plot details remain scarce. However, the new Tomb Raider game will be set “in a modern-day world rocked by a mysterious cataclysm” according to the leaked script.

It seems the team at Crystal Dynamics also want to explore Lara’s personal life. The game will reportedly feature her in “romantic scenes with another female character”.

It’s currently unknown whether the next game will be in any way related to the reboot trilogy or if it will feature an entirely new version of Lara Croft.

Next Tomb Raider Game Release Date

When will the new Tomb Raider game be released? Unfortunately, no details about its release date have been shared yet. Given the nature of modern video game development, there’s a strong possibility the game is still years away. So don’t get too excited.

It’s also worth pointing out that no official information about the game has been released. And while this new leak may be interesting, it’s far from confirmed. The final product could look very different.
