New default avatars have been introduced to popular gaming platform Roblox. The platform, which boasts over 200 million monthly active users, appears to be making the change to better support new animated heads.
The new avatars have a more realistic humanoid shape. This makes them notably different to historic Roblox avatars, well-known for their blocky look.
New players joining the platform will be assigned one of the new-style avatars, which began rolling out on 27th July. This also means male avatars are no longer equipped with “Bacon Hair” as standard.
This change has prompted a swift and confused response from Roblox players on social media. X (Twitter) user @_DJNinja wrote: “Roblox is making new default roblox avatars… And they look awful”.
Similarly, @tudorinfinity00 said: “why the f–k is this the new default roblox avatar”. @GoldentoyBonni2 commented on the change: “already hate these new default avatars on roblox”.
Despite the apparent frustration of some players, the company has confirmed it is “committed to all avatar styles including the classic look of our early avatars, while enabling all avatars to support the latest avatar technology such as face animation.”
This change to default avatars comes at the same time as Roblox‘s push towards animated avatars capable of utilising real-life player facial movements.
In a blog post on 1st August 2023, the company announced: “Starting today, we’re rolling out another new way for users to express themselves and communicate on Roblox. Any user 13 and older will now be able to use their camera to animate their avatar with their movement.”
