Another new Assassin’s Creed game, separate to the already announced Assassin’s Creed Infinity, is reportedly in development. It is scheduled to be released later this year or in 2023, Bloomberg reports.
The game is codenamed Rift and is set to star Assassin’s Creed Valhalla‘s Basim. Assassin’s Creed Rift started life as an expansion for Valhalla; however, it has grown into a standalone title to fill out Ubisoft’s release schedule.
New Assassin’s Creed Rift
Details are scarce but the report touched on a couple of key elements that should intrigue fans.
Firstly, the new Assassin’s Creed game will return to the series’ stealth-centric roots. It is also smaller in scale and won’t be a massive open-world RPG like Valhalla, Odyssey and Origins.
A spokesperson for Ubisoft told Bloomberg that they do not comment “on rumors or speculation as they do a disservice to our development teams and community,” but said they have a “solid and exciting line-up of titles in our pipeline, both established brands with new story twists and features, and brand new IPs that will continue to change the landscape of today’s video games.”
Until the release of Assassin’s Creed Origins in 2017, the series had stuck to an annual release cycle. Since then, Ubisoft has taken more time between games opting for a new release in the series every two years. This has also coincided with the series’ shift away from its stealthy origins and towards the role-playing genre. If this report is accurate, Assassin’s Creed Rift should be closer to the series’ pre-2017 games than more recent titles.
By the end of 2020, the series had sold over 155 million copies, making it one of the best selling video game series of all time.
