The Last of Us is, without question, one of the best video game series of all-time. The resounding success of the first two games even lead to the wildly popular TV series which brought Joel and Ellie’s story to new audiences. However, Neil Druckmann, Naughty Dog’s head of creative, has said that the studio won’t be dedicated to The Last of Us forever.

The first The Last of Us game arrived on the PS3 back in 2013. It received an expansion and was then followed by Part II in 2020. Both games are considered to be among the best ever, even though the second game’s story generated an enormous amount of debate between fans who loved and those that hated it.

This was followed by the HBO TV adaption which aired in 2023 and stars Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey as Joel and Ellie, respectively. Like the games, it received fantastic reviews. A second season is currently in production and is scheduled to air in 2025.

Despite all the success, Neil Druckmann told the Los Angeles Times during an interview that Naughty Dog will eventually move away from the series – presumably after the heavily rumoured The Last of Us Part III.

In the interview, Druckmann said: “I promise you, we will not be ‘The Last of Us’ studio forever.”

He added that Naughty Dog are currently working on “multiple single-player projects.”

What exactly those projects are is yet to be confirmed; however, they won’t “redefine mainstream perceptions of gaming” as Druckmann was misquoted by Sony as saying last month.
