Best new films January 2022
Some films in that list stand out more than others. So, what films are we most excited for? These are our top picks – and you can probably already guess them…
Morbius
Morbius is unquestionably January’s biggest film – although it’s always slim pickings when it comes to blockbusters at this time of year. It’s the third film in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU), following 2018’s Venom and 2021’s Venom: Let There Be Carnage. It tells the story of Dr. Michael Morbius (Jared Leto), who inadvertently turns himself into a vampire while trying to cure his rare blood disease. The Morbius trailer hints at some VERY interesting things (such as the inclusion of Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man). Whether or not we’ll actually see Tobey Maguire in Morbius is unclear, but we’re excited to see what Sony does next with their own shared universe.
Scream
Scream is the fifth instalment in the long-running slasher series. It’s a reboot of sorts, even though it’s a sequel to 2011’s solid Scream 4. This is the film’s official synopsis, and we’re keen to find out how it fits into the wider series narrative past and present:
“Twenty-five years after a streak of brutal murders shocked the quiet town of Woodsboro, a new killer has donned the Ghostface mask and begins targeting a group of teenagers to resurrect secrets from the town’s deadly past.”
