Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III is just two months away and Activision has shared a new trailer that reveals the game’s antagonist, Vladimir Makarov. Long-time Call of Duty fans (especially those who played the original MW3) will remember Makarov well. However, those newer to the series might be asking “who is Makarov?”

Before we get into that, let’s recap the latest trailer for Modern Warfare III.

The trailer is a combination of in-game and live action footage. Gameplay wise, we got a glimpse of an underwater swimming section, an infiltration in the pouring rain, and even some civilians fleeing a building that looks notably similar to Verdansk Stadium. There’s quite a bit to take in, so we recommend checking it out for yourself.

Meanwhile, we saw the debut of Bulgarian actor Julian Kostov as a heavily tattooed Makarov being escorted through a prison. At the end of the trailer, Captain Price declares that Makarov is Task Force 141’s next target.

The conclusion of last year’s Modern Warfare II saw Task Force 141 being betrayed by General Shepherd before putting a stop to a missile launch on U.S. soil led by Major Hassan Zyani, killing him in the process. During a debrief, CIA chief Kate Laswell informs Captain Price and TF-141 about the mastermind behind the missile plot – someone Price identifies simply as “Makarov”.

But who is Makarov in Modern Warfare 3? Let’s take a look…

Who is Makarov in Modern Warfare 3?

The upcoming Modern Warfare III game is the third instalment in the rebooted Modern Warfare sub-series.

While many of the characters reappear in the newer games, the events of the original trilogy haven’t happened in the rebooted continuity.

Makarov was a major figure in the original Modern Warfare games. But with it being more than ten years since the OG Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, many will have forgotten who he is.

So, who is Makarov in Modern Warfare 3? In the original series, Vladimir Makarov was the leader of an Ultranationalist extremist group that orchestrated World War III. Makarov was also the mastermind behind the infamous terrorist incident labeled as the “No Russian” attack at Zakhaev International Airport.

Drawing from Laswell’s portrayal of the rebooted Makarov in 2022’s Modern Warfare II, the character maintains significant similarities and continues to lead an Ultranationalist terrorist faction.

During the mid-credits scene in Modern Warfare II, an unidentified individual is depicted assembling a concealed firearm aboard an aircraft. This figure, presumably Makarov, proceeds to transmit a text message bearing the phrase “No Russian”.

Call of Duty fans will recollect that “No Russian” is the contentious mission from the original Modern Warfare 2, in which players engage in a terrorist assault at an airport. As earlier stated, this operation was a pivotal component of Vladimir Makarov’s scheme to initiate the global conflict of World War III. It appears that he has a similar plan in the works in the new Modern Warfare III.
