A Minecraft player has spotted a PS5 preview option in the settings of the game’s PS4 version, suggesting that a current-gen edition is on the way.

@doryNtr shared a screenshot of the Minecraft PS5 preview option (which appears to have been added by mistake in the game’s most recent update) on X. Minecraft Preview allows players to “experience the latest and greatest upcoming Minecraft features and provide feedback to the Mojang team.”

Upon selecting ‘Get PlayStation 5 Preview’ – which has now been removed – @doryNtr says a “content could not be found” message appeared. In contrast, pressing ‘Get PlayStation 4 Preview’ takes players to a PlayStation Store listing for the PS4 version of Minecraft Preview.

Minecraft, one of the world’s most popular games, remains stuck on last-gen consoles despite the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S being released almost four years ago. It is playable on the newer hardware but doesn’t take full advantage of enhancements the consoles may be capable of. As such, fans are still clamouring for an upgraded version of the game.

While it is unclear when a current-gen version of Minecraft will be released, this appears to be yet another leak indicating that it will be here sooner than later. Previously, an “Xbox Series” rating for the game was spotted on the ESRB website.

Of course, leaks such as this should be taken with a pinch of salt until an official announcement is made. Here’s hoping we won’t have much longer to wait.
