You read that right. Midnight Fight Express is being made by one guy. Showcased at Gamescom 2021 Opening Night Live, it took the internet by surprise. This hard-hitting brawler looks like it packs a serious punch. And it’s clear from the brief trailer we saw at Gamescom that Polish dev Jacob Dzwinel has pulled out all the stops to make it special and unique.

Essentially, the aim of the game is to fight your way across the city. You’ll battle in a variety of environments and situations as you encounter countless enemies. As was shown in the trailer, Midnight Fight Express looks vibrant, fun and colourful. And while its quiet development has flown under the radar, it certainly looks set to make a big bang on arrival through a combination of its gorgeous settings and brutal combat. If you’re as intrigued by MFE as we are, read on to find out everything we know so far…

The One Developer Game

It’s almost unbelievable to think that a game showcased at Gamescom is being made by just one person. But it’s true! According to Jacob Dzwinel’s Twitter bio, he’s a “solo developer & dad from Poland”. It sounds like a truly herculean undertaking to build an entire game – especially one as intricate-looking as this – alone. But he’s done it. And with the backing of publisher Humble Games, it looks like he’s set to make an impact on the gaming landscape.

Midnight Fight Express gameplay

MFE looks simultaneously straightforward and complex. What do I mean by that? Well, just take a close look at the action in the trailer. You fight people. That’s it. But it’s the depth of the fighting that has grabbed everyone’s attention. The game’s Steam listing best summarises it as a “brutal romp that mixes old school brawlers and fast-paced motion-captured combat.” Apparently, it centres on three key principles:

  • Master Multiple Combat Systems
  • Accessible but Difficult
  • Become the Ultimate Brawler

We already know about the different environments you’ll be brawling in. But you might be interested to hear that vehicles will play a big part in navigating those environments. And when it comes to the game’s combat systems, how you navigate areas and use different environmental factors to your benefit will likely be essential to success. It’s also interesting to hear it described as accessible yet challenging. I suspect that means button-mashing may well help complete early levels, but as difficulty ramps up you’ll have to pay closer attention to your skills and abilities to triumph. Lastly, we’ve been told that your fighter will unlock new cosmetics, moves and weapons as you progress. Which means you can look cool while dishing out punishment with your new techniques.

Platforms

What platforms is Midnight Fight Express on? It’s currently slated for PC, Xbox One, PS4 and Nintendo Switch. Obviously, the beauty of backwards compatibility means you’ll be able to experience it on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S also.

Release date

Considering one dude is making it, you’re probably wondering when is Midnight Fight Express coming out. Surely it must be quite far away? Nope. It’ll be arriving in just one year during Summer 2022.
