Fallout is probably the most popular video game franchise in the world right now. After the release of the excellent Fallout TV series, new and existing fans alike have been eager to jump into the games. However, there’s one major problem: Fallout 5 won’t arrive until the 2030s. Thankfully, plans are apparently in motion to expedite the next Fallout game in response to the franchise’s recent explosion in popularity.
According to Jez Corden of The Xbox Two podcast, Bethesda and Microsoft are “currently formulating plans” on how to get the next Fallout game out “sooner rather than later”.
Corden admits that this is “vague as hell” but that he thinks fans will see the next Fallout game before 2030 based on what he has heard.
He explains that this is possible because a developer – which he says won’t be Bethesda Game Studios – already has the engine from Starfield. This means that all they would need to do is make assets for the new game.
The next game will not necessarily be Fallout 5 but could be a spin-off title akin to Fallout: New Vegas, Corden continues. He believes that the game’s developer will “probably” be Obsidian and that “we’re not gonna have to wait that long for it.”
Microsoft purchased ZeniMax Media (Bethesda’s parent company) in 2021, thus bringing franchises such as Fallout and The Elder Scrolls under the Xbox umbrella.
While this news is certainly not confirmation that a new Fallout game is in active development with the aim of releasing it within the next 6 years, it’s a ray of hope for Fallout fans who were expecting an incredibly long wait for the series’ next entry.
Capitalising on the popularity of the Fallout TV show makes all the sense in the world. In fact, it’s quite baffling that the launch of a spin-off game (like New Vegas) wasn’t scheduled to coincide with the debut of the TV series. However, as we know with the protracted development cycle of the much-anticipated and long-awaited The Elder Scrolls 6, Bethesda aren’t all that interested in promptly releasing new games for their most popular IPs.
If Bethesda do opt to outsource development to another studio, this will be the first such title since Fallout: New Vegas.
