With Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 set to launch on 10th November, the rumour mill is in overdrive. This week alone has seen various leaks related to returning features (including the traditional mini map) and the game’s multiplayer launch maps. There are also whispers about whether Zombies is in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

Zombies is the long-running and beloved game mode where players must survive waves of undead hordes. It was first featured in Call of Duty: World at War in 2008. It has been a series mainstay ever since. However, the mode is primarily included Treyarch’s CoD games (although it has made sporadic appearances in instalments from other developers).

Despite this, every year, fans are keen to know whether the new Call of Duty title will feature Zombies. And if recent leaks are to be believed, the mode may be about to make its long-awaited debut in the Modern Warfare sub-series in MW3.

In this article, we’ll go through everything we know about Zombies in Modern Warfare 3 so far.

Is Zombies in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (2023)?

Activision has confirmed that Zombies mode is in Modern Warfare 3.

It was announced in an official Call of Duty blog on 16th August 2023. Activision describe the mode in Modern Warfare 3 as the “largest Zombies offering to date” and promised more information about it soon.

According to a report from Insider Gaming in May 2023, the Zombies mode will be similar to Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War‘s Outbreak: “the mode is essentially an Outbreak 2.0.”, the report stated.

Prior to Activision’s announcement, rumours regarding the Zombies mode resurfaced on X (Twitter). Notably, they were shared by a number of reputable Call of Duty news accounts (including CharlieIntel).

Furthermore, Activision heavily teased Zombies as part of its text message marketing campaign for Modern Warfare 3. X user @PrestigeIsKey sent a message reading “Zombies” to Activision on 16th August. In response, Activision sent a brief audio file featuring zombie noises. This was picked up and shared by ModernWarzone, who wrote: “Zombies confirmed.”

It’s also worth pointing out that Insider Gaming previously reported that “Activision is currently weighing the possibilities on if the mode should be a part of the premium title or not, or if it makes more sense for the mode to be a free-to-play experience.”

That means Zombies mode could be released separately to Modern Warfare 3 (in a similar way to how Warzone works), if Activision decided to go that route.

What is Outbreak Zombies in Call of Duty?

Outbreak is an open-world, objective-focused Zombies mode.

Unlike traditional Zombies, Outbreak takes place on a large map where players must fight an unlimited number of undead enemies. Players must also complete tasks, gather weapons and equipment, collect power-ups, and exfiltrate to safety (if they choose to).

Whether Outbreak will be an identical experience to the mode in Black Ops Cold War is unclear. However, it’s likely it will feature a number of changes and enhancements that set it apart from its predecessor.

Of course, fans will need to wait for more details from Activision regarding Zombies before getting too excited about it. Here’s hoping the first Zombies outing in Modern Warfare delivers.
