Warzone 2.0 launched in November 2022 after a huge amount of speculation and anticipation. Players are now very familiar with Al Mazrah; however, some are still yearning for the original Warzone.

The changes Warzone 2.0 introduced resulted in a mixed reaction from players. Some love it, and others really don’t.

Those who aren’t enjoying it have been looking for a way to play the original Warzone which was taken offline when Warzone 2.0 launched.

So, is Warzone 1 still playable?

For those wanting to know if Warzone 1 is still playable, the answer is yes. The original version of Call of Duty‘s popular battle royale – now dubbed “Warzone Caldera” – is available to play. However, it is more stripped back than before and will be shut down for good on 21 September 2023.

Warzone Caldera only offers players the option of Solos or Quads – no Duos or Trios. A Rebirth/Resurgence mode is also absent.

Still, it’s great the option to play the OG Warzone is still there. Now, let’s go over how to play, download, and install Warzone Caldera…

How To Download Warzone 1 (Caldera)

Since the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II and Warzone 2.0, many players will have uninstalled 2019’s Modern Warfare and the original Warzone.

As long as you own Modern Warfare (2019), it doesn’t matter whether you uninstalled it or not. It’s possible to download Warzone Caldera either way.

Note: Warzone Caldera appears to have been removed from digital store fronts. So, if you’ve already uninstalled it and don’t own the full Modern Warfare (2019) game, you won’t be able to re-download it.

This is how to download and install Warzone Caldera:

If you still have the original Modern Warfare or Warzone installed, boot up the game. At the main menu, open the Options menu and tab across to ‘Account’.

Under ‘Game’, select ‘Game Installs’. Scroll to the bottom of the list – download and install both ‘Warzone Caldera Pack 1’ and ‘Warzone Caldera Pack 2’.

Alternatively, you can select ‘Warzone Caldera’ from the Modern Warfare section of the main menu. This will open the Game Installs section where you can follow the same steps as above.

If you uninstalled Modern Warfare, simply pop in the disc or re-download it from your game library. After it has installed, boot up the game and select ‘Warzone Caldera’ from the main menu.

A prompt will give you the option to jump to Warzone 2.0, but select ‘Download Warzone Caldera’ instead. This will open the Game Installs screen where you need to manually download ‘Warzone Caldera Pack 1’ and ‘Pack 2’.

How To Play Warzone 1

Once you have downloaded and installed Warzone Caldera, playing it again is simple.

This is how to play Warzone Caldera: From the main menu, select ‘Warzone Caldera’. This will bring up the familiar squad walk screen.

Under the Play tab, select either ‘Battle Royale Quads’ or ‘Battle Royale Solos’.

From here, the game will start matchmaking and you can once again drop into the original Warzone.
