Is The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered free? Explained

The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered will finally allow the acclaimed 2020 game to take full advantage of the PS5. Boasting enhanced graphics, faster load times, and plenty of new content, it’s an upgrade worth getting excited about. But, as always, the big question on gamers’ minds is price. Given many PlayStation owners will have already purchased The Last of Us Part 2 on PS4, it’s understandable that many will want to know if its remastered version is free.

With remastered editions of video games becoming evermore commonplace, some companies have attempted to capitalise on the trend and charge near-full price for slightly better versions of older titles. In recent years, gamers have become increasingly frustrated with this.

As such, publishers began offering upgrade paths. These allow people who already own the original version of a game to buy the new edition at a significant discount. While players can look forward to a new roguelike survival mode – No Return – in TLOU2 Remastered, Lost Levels, and even a Guitar Free Play mode, a full price rerelease of an almost four-year-old game would be considered a far from essential purchase.

With that being said, let’s get into the price of The Last of Us 2 Remastered on PS5 and explain if there is an upgrade path available.

Is The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered free for existing owners?

The Last of Us 2 Remastered is not free for existing owners. However, there is an upgrade path and it will cost just $10 to upgrade to the remastered version.

Regional pricing has not yet been confirmed. Naughty Dog has explained that players should check the PlayStation Store on launch day for local prices.

Can disk copies be upgraded?

Disc copies of The Last of Us Part 2 can be upgraded to the PS5 remastered version as part of the $10 upgrade path. Naughty Dog has confirmed, however, that disc copies can only be upgraded if you have a PS5 with a disc drive.

Similarly, players will need to insert the PS4 disc for The Last of Us Part 2 every time they want to play the remastered version on PS5.

The Last of Us 2 Remastered price

While The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered will cost just $10 for existing owners, it is priced at $49.99/£44.99 for any one purchasing it for the first time.

In our opinion, this is a fair price for an enhanced version of such an incredible AAA game. With the new content it includes sweetening the deal, players shouldn’t be put off by its price tag – especially if they haven’t played TLOU2 before.

It was our favourite game of 2020 and it told a gripping and emotionally impactful story that we still haven’t quite gotten over. Its brutal combat and immersive stealth mechanics remain second to none.

Of course, the second season of HBO’s The Last of Us TV series is rapidly approaching. So, now is the perfect time to play the game it’s based on and find out what’s likely to be in store.

The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered will be released for PS5 on 19 January 2024.
