Tekken 7 may have only been released back in 2017 but the wait for Tekken 8 has been long. Thankfully, the September 13th PlayStation State of Play gave us the first Tekken 8 trailer – and we are ready for the next battle! However, due to its debut at a PlayStation event, many fans are asking “Is Tekken 8 PS5 exclusive?”.
Traditionally, Tekken games would release in video game arcades several months prior to home consoles. However, when the new games did finally hit consoles, they were exclusive to PlayStation.
The original Tekken game arrived almost 30 years ago, back in 1994. It was exclusive to the original PlayStation console.
Similarly, Tekken 2 (one of my personal favorites) was only on Sony’s PlayStation. Tekken 3, which saw the debut of fan favorite Jin Kazama, was the final game in the series for the PS1 – and it didn’t show up on any other platforms.
Tekken 4, with its significantly upgraded graphics and unique feel, was the first game in the series released for the PlayStation 2. Even now, Tekken 4 feels like a refreshing change to the series’ traditional visual and musical formula.
However, despite the shift in tone, the series’ fourth instalment was still only available on the PS2. 2005’s Tekken 5 also remained out of reach for Xbox owners.
2009’s Tekken 6 was the first game in the series to be cross-platform when it released jointly on the PlayStation 3 and Microsoft’s Xbox 360. Every subsequent game in the series has also been available on multiple platforms.
But with its surprise debut at a PlayStation event, is Tekken 8 PS5 exclusive? Or will Tekken 8 be on Xbox?

The new Tekken 8 trailer shows another fight in the long rivalry between Kazuya Mishima and his son Jin Kazama.
Footage for the trailer was captured in real-time on the PlayStation 5. And it looks visually stunning thanks to the use of Unreal Engine 5.

Is Tekken 8 PS5 Exclusive?
Thanks to the series’ history as a PlayStation exclusive, many fans are anxious to know if Tekken 8 will be on Xbox.
After all, the last three mainline games have been available on Xbox consoles, so it would be really disappointing for Xbox fans to miss out on the new game.
Is Tekken 8 PS5 exclusive? No, Tekken 8 is not exclusive to PS5. Bandai Namco has confirmed it will also be released for Xbox Series X|S and PC.
This is great news for fans of the series who’ve enjoyed many hours of Tekken 7 on either PC or Xbox.
As for whether Tekken 8 will feature cross-play, we unfortunately don’t know yet. Bandai Namco hasn’t confirmed the feature – but hopefully it will be possible.
Maybe it will finally provide a way for PlayStation and Xbox diehards to settle their differences? Wishful thinking, perhaps.
