After much anticipation, Rockstar Games has officially announced a rerelease of the original Red Dead Redemption on 17 August. Recognised as a gaming masterpiece, this classic western, originally released for the PS3 and Xbox 360, will now be available on “modern consoles”. But what does Rockstar mean by “modern consoles”, and is the Red Dead Redemption rerelease coming to PS5?
2010’s Red Dead Redemption revolves around John Marston, entangled in his former life as an outlaw on the American Frontier. Compelled by the US government who have kidnapped his wife and daughter, he embarks on a quest to apprehend former associates of his outlaw gang.
The impending rerelease will include the Undead Nightmare expansion pack, a notable DLC that even received a standalone physical release. This expansion takes place in an alternate timeline, where John Marston must fight against a horrific zombie outbreak. His mission: to unveil the origins of the plague and discover a remedy for the contagion that has befallen his family.
As the excitement among fans mounts to once again step into the shoes of John Marston, let’s take a look at if Red Dead Redemption will be coming to PS5…
Is the Red Dead Redemption rerelease coming to PS5?
Is the Red Dead Redemption rerelease coming to PS5? The new rerelease of Red Dead Redemption will run natively on Nintendo Switch and PS4, and will be available on PS5 via backwards compatibility.
This means that fans who want to play the game on the PlayStation 5 will need to purchase the PS4 version and install it on the newer console.
Rockstar Games explained: “In a new conversion by Double Eleven Studios, the Switch and PS4 versions bring the two classic experiences together again for both new players and original fans to enjoy across modern consoles, including backwards compatibility with the PlayStation 5.”
Because of the PS5’s ability to play PS4 games, the new Red Dead Redemption rerelease will be playable on Sony’s latest console. However, this re-launch is not a remaster and will not feature current-gen features like 4K resolution and adaptive triggers. Instead, the game will be exactly as it was on the PS3.
