The fifth and final season of Top Boy is almost upon us. After more than a year of waiting, fans will find out how the 12-year story ends for Dushane (Ashley Walters) and Sully (Kano). On 14th August, Netflix dropped the official full-length trailer for the season. And it appears to hint at the return of fan-favourite character Ra’Nell. This has left fans asking whether Ra’Nell is in the final season of Top Boy on Netflix.
Ra’Nell Smith, portrayed by Malcolm Kamulete, was the show’s main character (along with Dushane and Sully) during the first two seasons (now called Top Boy: Summerhouse). His character arc focussed on his life around the Summerhouse estate. It also explored the psychological struggles of his mother Lisa and his increasing involvement in criminality.
Ra’Nell was a schoolboy and was last seen at the end of season two. In his final scene, Ra’Nell’s friend Gem Mustapha meets him on the local football field. Gem informs Ra’Nell that he is moving to Ramsgate with his Dad. They then agree, in their own way, that they will see each other again.
While Gem returned to Top Boy in Season 3 on Netflix, Ra’Nell was curiously absent. But it appears the character may be in line for a comeback.
Is Ra’Nell in the final season of Top Boy on Netflix?
Ra’Nell is featured in the trailer for the final season of Top Boy on Netflix. However, his return to the series has not been confirmed.
It is important to note that while Ra’Nell is in the trailer, he appears in a flashback. Therefore, there is no guarantee he will be back. Instead, it is more likely that elements of Ra’Nell’s story may be revisited in the new season or that he will at least be mentioned.
Ra’Nell being discussed by characters in the final season will be noteworthy, as, to date, there has been no mention of him despite his significant role in the earlier seasons.
Ashley Walters previously confirmed to Radio Times that while Malcolm Kamulete had been approached regarding a return to Top Boy, he turned it down to focus on football.
However, those comments were made prior to Season 4’s debut in 2022. Therefore, the situation may have changed and there is a possibility that Malcolm Kamulete will appear as Ra’Nell in the final season of Top Boy.
Of course, this would be a dream come true for Top Boy fans as Ra’Nell’s fate and whereabouts have long been debated. So, to finally get an answer to those questions before the series comes to end would be fitting.
