With Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 set for release on 10th November 2023, fans are keen to know exactly what to expect from the game. It has perhaps been the most mysterious new CoD title in recent memory and speculation has been rampant. Some have even suggested that Modern Warfare 3 will be a DLC for 2022’s MW2.
The reason for these rumours is clear. 2023 will mark the first time that Modern Warfare games have been released back-to-back. While Activision has described this as “years in the making”, Modern Warfare 3‘s existence wasn’t always so certain.
Following the release of Modern Warfare 2 last year, reports suggested that 2023 wouldn’t receive a new Call of Duty game. Activision did eventually confirm that 2023 would get “premium paid content”. But this fuelled rumours that the next Call of Duty game would just be new content for MW2 rather than a full release.
Now Modern Warfare 3 has been officially announced by Activision, here’s what we know about what the game actually is.
Is Modern Warfare 3 a DLC for MW2?
Modern Warfare 3 is not DLC for MW2. It is a full premium game and separate from MW2.
Activision confirmed this in an official Call of Duty blog on 16th August 2023, stating: “this year’s premium release serves as a direct sequel to last year’s Modern Warfare II.”
Furthermore, Modern Warfare 3 will have its own campaign, multiplayer, co-op, and Zombies modes, and feature ‘Carry Forward’. This lets players bring inventory and progression from Modern Warfare 2 into Modern Warfare 3.
Modern Warfare 3 is set to be fully revealed to players during a special reveal event on 17th August. Its multiplayer component will reportedly be made up of remastered maps from 2009’s Modern Warfare 2 at launch.
