The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is finally here. After what has felt like an eternity of anticipation, fans are at last able to venture back to Middle-earth. The new series tells a story many fans of the previous cinematic adaptions will be unfamiliar with. As a result, viewers will be wondering if any of their favourite characters will be returning – such as Isildur. Is Isildur in The Rings of Power?

Firstly, let’s discuss The Rings of Power and how it fits into the wider The Lord of the Rings universe.

Amazon’s new TV show for Prime is set during the Second Age. This is thousands of years before the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, which take place during the Third Age.

While viewers will undoubtedly be familiar with the events of those films – as well as the books they’re based on – The Rings of Power isn’t based on any one specific work by J.R.R. Tolkien.

Instead, The Rings of Power combines material and lore from The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings and its appendices to create its narrative.

In the show’s first three episodes, viewers are introduced to a huge cast of characters. And some of those characters are ones that fans will know and love, such as Galadriel and Elrond.

As The Rings of Power takes place in the Second Age, you might be wondering if one familiar character in particular will be featured – Isildur. After all, he was in The Lord of the Rings film trilogy and is the man who vanquishes Sauron. So, is Isildur in The Rings of Power?

Is Isildur in The Rings of Power?

Isildur’s role in the wider Middle-earth story is an important one. And many fans will be expecting to see him in The Rings of Power, primarily to set up the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.

Is Isildur in The Rings of Power? Yes – Isildur is in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. He is portrayed by Maxim Baldry and first appears in episode 3 “Adar”.

Isildur is introduced as the son of Elendil, a man from a noble line who is now a Sea Guardsman living in the Kingdom of Númenor.

Isildur is first shown on a ship ahead of a Sea Trial. He is expected to complete the Sea Trial and follow his father into service. He has a sister called Eärien in the series (a non-canon character created for The Rings of Power).

Later in episode 3, Isildur decides he wants to defer the Sea Trial for a season. This disappoints Elendil who is adamant Isildur must do it as soon as possible.
