Gotham Knights is almost here and reception to its hands-on previews and trailers has been mixed. There is considerable excitement for the game but revelations about its features have tempered expectations. A recent announcement from developer WB Games Montreal has fans particularly concerned. It has left them asking “Is Gotham Knights 30 FPS?”

Gotham Knights is WB Games Montreal’s first game since 2013’s Batman: Arkham Origins.

For those who don’t know, Batman: Arkham Origins was the third instalment in the acclaimed Batman: Arkham series of games. While Arkham Asylum, Arkham City, and Arkham Knight were excellently received, Origins was not. The PS3 version sits at a mixed 76/100 on Metacritic.

In their review, Gamespot said: “Batman: Arkham Origins is a deeply predictable game. It gives you exactly what you’d expect in another Arkham game, without doing anything to push the series forward.”

Nevertheless, it is important to remember that Gotham Knights is not Arkham Origins. And it still has the chance to be better than even Origins‘ superior siblings.

However, new revelations about the game’s performance, particularly on console, have left fans disappointed and concerned.

So, what can fans expect from it? And is Gotham Knights 30 FPS?

What Is Gotham Knights About?

Gotham Knights is based on DC’s Batman: Gotham Knights comic series.

The game follows superheroes Batgirl, Night Wing, Robin, and Red Hood in the aftermath of Batman’s death. The demise of the World’s Greatest Detective has left a vacuum in Gotham City that has been filled with crime and lawlessness.

The four heroes receive a pre-recorded message from Bruce Wayne and they decide to continue his fight to protect Gotham.

Gotham Knights is an open-world action RPG in which players can control each of the four heroes and use their unique abilities to fight criminals across the city. It also features vehicles such as the Batcycle which players can use to traverse Gotham.

The game will launch with both a single-player story mode and co-operative multiplayer for two players. In November, a four player co-op mode, Heroic Assault, will also be added.

Is Gotham Knights 30 FPS?

Gotham Knights is launching on October 21st 2022 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

With it skipping last-generation consoles, fans are hoping for visuals and performance befitting Microsoft and Sony’s new hardware. And fans are asking “Is Gotham Knights 30 FPS?” or “Is Gotham Knights 60 FPS?”.

These days, most games launch on current-generation consoles with two modes: visual/quality and performance.

Quality modes typically offer 4K resolution and ray tracing but are capped at 30 frames-per-second.

Performance modes have increased frame rates of 60 or 120 FPS but at dynamic 4K or lower resolutions like 1440p or 1080p. Ray tracing is also disabled.

However, it has been confirmed that Gotham Knights will not have switchable quality and performance modes on console.

Is Gotham Knights 30 FPS or 60 FPS? Gotham Knights is capped at 30 FPS on consoles. This was confirmed by the game’s executive producer Fleur Marty who wrote, “our game does not have a performance/quality toggle option and will run at 30FPS on consoles.”

“Due to the types of features we have in our game, like providing a fully untethered co-op experience in our highly detailed open-world, it’s not as straightforward as lowering the resolution and getting a higher FPS.”

PC players will, of course, be able to tweak their settings to get the most out of their hardware. However, it is important to remember that what is possible is dependent on how well the game is optimised.

So, there you have it – Gotham Knights is 30 FPS on consoles.
